    66 4sp-shifter

I'm trying to find out if some early 66 cars still had the shifter mounted to the transmission instead of the frame. The frame on the car I'm doing has the two holes in the rear of the cross member but does not look like it ever had any bolts in it (no threads). The car was built 12-8-65.

    John,

Your transmission mounted shifter is probably correct for your early 66. The change to a crossmember mounted shifter occured some time in 1966 but I believe it was somewhere around mid production??
I have the GM paperwork and date that this change occured and when/if I find it, I'll post it.

Sept. 23rd '65 build date on my '66 roadster....no shifter bracket on frame. Shifter mounted to tranny with mounting plate.

            66 4sp-shifter; frame mount from VIN ~ 17,161

Based on the 3-21-66 date in the GM Tech Service Bulletin announcing the next day change-over, cars with VINs of approximately 17,161 (first car with a 3-22-66 birthdate according to the C2 Corvette registry) and higher would have the shifter mounted to the frame. Of course, there is some accepted uncertainty in the birthdate calculator, so the 17161 VIN is just an estimate.

              Hey Michael,

My car is also a Sept 23, 1965 build. Mine's a coupe, s/n 1478. Yours must be real close to that.

So if the owner took it in under warranty and complained of this shifter rattle would they have reloacated it to crossmember?

My AOS '66 trim tag is H16 (March 16th), # 17534 and the M21 is dated P0321 (March 21st) and I'm sure it's transmission mounted.
