When We Were Young With Our Corvettes - Chapter #22(complete)

When I was early discharged from active duty in the Army to return to college, I was reassigned to Army Reserve status to complete my obligation. Then when I came to California, the Army eventually moved me to inactive status, but left me with an active Army Reserve Identification Card that had not yet expired. This proved to be useful on more than one occasion.

Originally conceived by Henry J. Kaiser, a steel maker and builder of Liberty ships during WWII (automobiles later), the Hercules was designed and built by Howard Hughes and his staff as a military cargo seaplane. The Spruce Goose30 feet longer than a football field

    Jack is still sleeping.

Just what was I supposed to do? Listen, I helped out as much as I could.

    EPILOG

In 1980, the Hercules was acquired by the California Aero Club, who eventually put the plane on display in a large, circular dome adjacent to the Queen Mary exhibit on the Long Beach oceanfront. In 1988, the Walt Disney Company acquired both attractions and the associated real estate and notified the club that it no longer wanted to display the seaplane. After a long search, the club finally awarded custody of Hercules to the Evergreen Aviation Museum. In 1992 under direction of the museum staff, Hercules was wrapped in plastic and moved by barge to McMinnville, OR (just outside Portland) where it sat outdoors in the elements for several years while its permanent home, where it now resides, was built.

The NCRS Road Tour from Portland to Monterey stopped at the Evergreen Aviation Museum. That Museum is a remarkable place, and that is a truly gigantic aircraft. I highly recommend the Evergreen Aviation Museum to anyone even remotely interested in aviation. It is very much worth the time to see.

I was on a layover several years ago in Portland and decided to rent a car for a scenic tour of the Oregon countryside. I did stop at the Evergreen Museum and it is definitely a worthy stop. Beautiful aircraft of all types. After we left the museum we took a drive toward the coast and came across another even more remarkable museum. It was the old retired Tilamonk Naval Air Station. Truly a site to behold. One could only imagine the large blimps that once roamed the area and were docked there. Lots of fantastic war birds there to see as well. Highly recommend it as a stop over for aviation lovers.

        Looking forward to visiting again.

        Cheers,
        Craig

            Stwey:

Glad it brought back some youthful memories.
That's what Corvettes for many of us are suppose to do.
I try to straddle what was reality when we were kids...with our raging hormones...and what conversation we are prepared to tolerate today as adults.
It's delicate and I mean to offend no one. And I apologize to those who are.
I so want you and your group to have good experiences when you come to America. I'm not alone.

Takes a bit to offend me Bill. The only thing I worry about these days is my Vette running well. Stewy
