    63 Alternator alignment

To install AC, I have moved the alternator to the driver side. The original bracket is like every bracket I have ever seen, and has a split pin shim that is driven in the rear hole of the bracket. The pin is tapped in to keep the alternator from wobbling on the bolt. The bracket that I purchased (Corvette Central) for the driver side did not come with such a pin, and the construction of the rear "ear" of the bracket is such that there is not enough metal to allow drilling out the hole to accept the pin. I have tried to use washers as shims, but can't get a precise enough shim to eliminate the wobble. Two questions: 1) Does anyone know where I can get a driver side bracket equipped with the pin, or failing that 2) any suggestions on shimming the one I have?

Steve -- not sure I'm following you, but when you move the alternator from the passenger side to the driver side, the air cars have a different LH exhaust manifold, (cast 3846563 for a 2_1/2" outlet, in the case of 1965) to which an entirely different alternator mount bracket is required --- looks nothing like the one for the passenger side with the long bolt and the slit sleeve that I think you're describing. For the A/C bracket, the lower alt mount bolt screws directly into a threaded hole in the front face of the exh. manifold.

If you have a copy of your AIM, it shows well there.

On the 63, the bracket for the driver side is a bit shorter than the one for the passenger side, but is basically the same. The AC section of the 63 AIM shows the driver side bracket with a split sleeve also, but the AIM calls the sleeve a bushing.

        Wayne,

The mounting for the 64-65 left side is entirely different from the 63. The 63 has a mount similar to the right side on the exhaust manifold.

The exhaust for the left side on the 63 is part number 3787901. It is available from Paragon or your friendly parts supplier.

You are correct in referring him to the AIM as it shows clearly how the 63 is mounted.

OOps -- those dang '63's. Although I only have '65 AIM, I should have done due diligence (this morning I checked Noland's Vol 2, and there's a drawing there).
