    T-T10 adjustments

I had a problem with my transmission popping out of second gear and grinding from third to second. I read all the posts and thought that it is an internal problem and probably the synchro should be replaced.

SO, I replaced my T-10 with a proper dated one that came out of another corvette. It was working fine when it was removed, but it was stored for 20 years.

On my first test drive it popped out of second and the grinding was there again going from third to second gear. However if i hold the shifter in second it wont pop out, it tries but stays in.. The grinding from third to second is still there.

Before I pull this one and have it torn apart, is there anything else to try? am I missing an adjustment or am I just unlucky with T-10's.

Can the sidecover be contributing any?

The shifter is a replacement 4 speed from Corvette America. We tried to make adjustemtnes but it didnt seem to help.

    Appreciate your advice

    Thanks

    Joe

Best thing for a T10 is to replace the sliders when you do a rebuild with torq loc sliders. They don't cost much and solve the problem of jumping out of gear that plagues T10s

What can you tell by looking at this picture? Everything looks good to me... Am I missing something? I am not an expert yet.. but i dont see any broken teeth, and not sure just how worn they would be to be bad?

        Thanks for your help.

          Joe & Stewy,
Torque Lock sliders are about $30 to $40 and can be found at many sources, including D&L Transmission and The Gear Box. They cure the problem with T10s jumping gears, having a different cut back on engagement teeth. They help with worn gears, too.
Hard to be certain from a photo, but the gears look ok from what shows. To know for sure, you have to do a hands-on appraisal. Likely changing the sliders and synchro rings will work wonders. Just take the box apart and do a rebuild. Since it's out, it only makes sense to go through it and change the bearings, synchro keys, needle bearings, thrust washers, bushings and snap rings while you're at it. While it sounds like a lot, it isn't. Complete parts kits are available and if you have access to a press, good snap ring pliers, some bearing pullers and a dial indicator, it is pretty straight forward to do. If you can't do it, find an old hand who can.
          Good luck,
          Reed

Joe, It's probably a combination of problems, starting with wore engagement teeth on the gears and synchro rings and play in the sliders and shifting rods so it's not being held in gear.

Parts are available, when I did mine the torque lock slider was used in the first/second but regular slider for third/forth. Also used a new input, second and third gear because of the same problem.
