Without more specific identification, and access to my AIM which is currently unavailable, I can't really give you the indisputable correct answer from my notes.

However...As Ed says, they are almost certainly black phosphate, and for a couple of reasons: (1) Virtually all chassis fasteners are black phosphate with a few exceptions. The phosphate coating was cheaper than the more durable zinc plating, but gives good corrosion resistance for a few years, and (2) Any chassis fasteners that are exposed to view are almost ALWAYS black so they are NOT seen; i.e. to blend into the dark background.

I have a 68 that I am restoring and the rear bumper bracket bolts, serrated washer are black phosphated. The nut is zinc plated.
I have some originals that were taken off original cars.

Now for the front bolts off some original 68 cars. The bolts, washer, lock washer and nut is zinc plated.

I have seen some original 68 69 cars and the front bumper frame bolts looked black due to light over spray of under tar coating.

Maybe the 71's front bumper bolts changed to black phosphate due to cost cutting??? It is cheaper than having it zinc plated.

I have a 71 454 but have put those bolts away so I don't know. I will have to dig them out.

Hi Paul,
On my 71 the bolts are dark phosphate and the serrated washers are brite plated. The bolt head marks are 'M' on one side and 'A' on the other. 2 boxes of bolts... 2 suppliers?
