    Am I right or am I wrong?

    I bought a 2" under the car exhaust system from Zip Products (p/n EX2000) for my -66 300HP Powerglide. When trying to mount it, the passenger side front exhaust pipe fits ok ending up flush to the rear end of the exhaust hanger under the powerglide. The driver side front exhaust pipe ends up beyond the exhaust hanger, in fact it ends up inside the crossmember. So there is no way to place the clamp where pipes connects together.
    The pipes has a length difference of more than 2 inches (please see enclosed picture with the driver side pipe to the left). The left (driver side) exhaust manifold (and cylinder head) seems to be about 1 inch further to the front on the engine compared to the one on the right side. So the length difference of the exhaust pipes should be about 1 inch, not more than 2 inches. Can someone please confirm or reject my theory before I start to try and shorten the driver side exhaust pipe.

    Hans;

    My guess is that you are probably correct about shortening the one pipe. Before you do anything however, I would (attempt to) install the entire system and check clearances etc., and then make your decision

    I bought an Allen's set for my (early) 1963 and had to shorten the engine pipe 1/2" on the right side to keep the muffler from making contact with the body way toward the rear. The left side was spot on.

    Good luck,

    Joel

      Hans, In your post you state the drivers side pipe is on the left in the picture.. It's been my experence, looking at your picture the pipe on the right would be drivers side. I say this because the bump out for the oil filter is obvious in that pipe.

      Double check installation before cutting pipes, you may have them reversed..

        Tanks Joel and Timothy,
        I havn't solved my problem yet, but I will try to install the entire system to see exactly how much modification is needed.
        The left pipe on my picture is for the driver side. First of all it is marked with this info.
        And I have tried the install the other pipe on the driver side and it does not fit at all.

          Hans, I just removed a 2" system from my 67 Powerglide car as part of a conversion to a Tremec 5-speed. The system I removed fit just fine. It is now stacked in the corner of my garage and it would be easy for me to make any particular measurement that you would like to have.

          Let me know if there is a specific measurement you would like me to check for you.

            Joe;

            I trust that with that new 5 speed you'll be using something better than a 2" system on your Vette now.

              Re: Am I right or am I wrong?

              Hi Stu:

              Yes, I now have the 1967 2.5 inch system that uses the 2 inch manifolds.
              I also have a pair of 1965 2.5 inch manifolds at Jerry MacNeish's getting his rust-proof coating. When the manifolds come back I will convert to a full 2.5 inch system.

              I had planned to buy the new reproduction off road mufflers that Corvette Central has, but I decided they were a bit too loud for my tastes. So, I bought the Allens "medium loud" versions and I like them.

                Hi Joe,

                That would be great I'm attaching 2 pictures where I show how I meassure my driver side front exhaust pipe. It is about 40 3/4 inch from the outer front and rear points. Thanks in advance for this great help.

                  Here's pics from a '66 powerglide 2" system removed from my car for other maintenance. It is a quality repro and fits up fine. If I've captured the hypotenuse you're trying to describe, mine's about 3" shorter than yours.

                  I'll attempt to post thumbnails, but have never successfully done so. If they fail to display, I'll compress and repost or email to you.

                    Hi Jeff,

                    Your thumbnails looks fine. So this proves that the exhaust pipe I got is wrong. The almost 3 inch difference is what is causing problems to install the pipe. When I try to install it, it ends up inside the crossmember and there is no way to position the clamp where the front and rear pipes joins together. And the front pipe is not easily shortened either becuase of the shape of the pipe. I will contact Zip Products to discuss how we solve this problem.

                    Thanks a lot Jeff for this valuable info.

                      Hi Hans:

                      It looks like Jeff beat me to it, but attached are photos of the 2 inch Powerglide pipes that came off my 67. The dimension you show seems to be about 38-1/4 inches on my driver's side pipe (and also on the passenger side pipe).

                        I contacted Zip Products and they did send me a new pie with correct dimensions.
