    F40 Leaf Spring Questions

I beleieve the 1965 Judging Manual states that the liner should be left out between the 6th & 7th spring. Mine appears to have it installed. Should I replicate the Judging Manual or restore to what the car has currently?

Should all 7 spring have an arch to them? Mine do and I just want to confirm there shouldn't be any straight springs like a 9 leaf.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Enjoy your Memoroal Day.

Thanks for the response John. When doing a restoration is it better to restore what you have if you have documentation or should you restore to what is believed to be factory correct? I think I should restore to what is there and provide photos of how I dismantled the car. Thoughts? HAs anyone else had liners between all springs?

Hi Brian, my orig untouch till me 63 spring doesnt have a liner between 6&7, but a picture is worth its weight, to me anyway. My springs made by GLS all have the arch as yours does. Do a little checking with cars around yours, if yours got out that way, maybe somemore out there, maybe Wayne or someone else will chime in. Phil 8063

          Thanks for the advice Phil,
My car was built on July 8th, 1965. Anyone have a car built around that time with an F40 Suspension? Thanks.

            Brian,

No straight leafs in an F-40/41 rear spring. Also no liner between the top 2 leafs.

Trivia - GLS wasn't the spring manufacturer - the "GLS" roll-formed on the edge of the leaf stands for Great Lakes Steel, who supplied the raw rolled stock used by Ontario Steel Products and Rockwell to make the springs.

                    +1 what John Cook said.

If we make all the cars like the TIM&JG, we will never get the TIM&JG accurate. Do your due diligence, come to the meet with pictures, and be prepared to lose some points until we see the error of our ways. Have faith that we will eventually get it right.

John Hinckley; GLS vs. GMU embossing

                      John,

Do you know the story of the GMU embossing on the edge of some leaves on some Corvette springs?

Re: John Hinckley; GLS vs. GMU embossing

It appears that the GLS and GMU are the manufactures of the steel stock as opposed to spring manufacture. GLS would mean Great Lakes Steel, sorry not sure what GMU stands for.

                          Gary -

No, I don't, but I'm sure Franz Estereicher does; he was responsible for the spring designs and manufacturing processes.

                            GMU embossing

                            John,

I talked with Franz some years ago about the GMU marking and he didn't offer a guess as to what it meant. He actually expressed some surprise that any spring engineer would add an embossment that would result in a stress concentration and a reduction in fatigue life in a part that experiences high cyclic streses. Frankly I happy that the spring on my '66 doesn't have an embossment on any leaves.

                              Re: F40 Leaf Spring Questions

Thanks for the great responses everyone.
I spoke with the prior owner who says he never took the spring out of the car or ever had it apart. I plan to reinstall liners between all springs. May not be correct per the Judging manual but I feel that is the way I found it and have the photos to substantiate it. Thanks again for the feedback.
                              Regards,
                              Brian
