C1 Molded Ridge On Trunk Lock

I just realized that my 1960 trunk above the trunck lock has been modified to make it smooth with the rest of the trunk. This was probably done in the 70's.

A friends 59 also had the same "customization". His was probably done about the same time.

Was this a popular modification back then ? Is it a pretty straight forward repair ? If I make an inside and outside mold off an unmodified trunk lid would this be over kill ?

Can anyone send me a picture of what this is supposed to look like. How much does it protrude from the trunk surface ?

I'd bet that when the car was painted in the past, it just got sanded off.

My old 54 was the same way. I had to "re-create" the lip.

Mine looks like they sanded it off and then reinforced the back. They did a good job.

Was it easy to recreate the lip ?

you're biggest hassle will be removing the reinforcement on the backside. if not removed, getting the trunk lock retainer in place will be a bear. mike

Stewy - the ridge is above the lock. Yours could have been sanded down some which weakened it.

Loren - thanks for the pictures. This will help a lot.

I have seen a couple of cars like mine it seems it's quiet common. I have grabbed a few of these photos so I can shape mine correctly. Thanks for the lock thread Mark ?

Loren after spending some time looking at the lock area is the top part an external ridge like a rib. It's a clear photo but it's still hard to tell. Mine has nothing, like Mark said it's been blocked away ? Are the 56-60 the same ?

                      Stewy,

Picture is from an unrestored '58.

Stewy - The rib protrudes out I think 1/8" or so. It is not an indent.

Thanks Donald my camera won't focus real well up close yours is spot on. I need to get a new one but at $1500 bucks for the one I want it can wait a couple more months (thats a set of 692 heads). The hole that the lock goes in on all the pictures look like it's not a well engineered piece. I'm looking forward to molding up a new one for mine. I love small jobs that can take a month to get correct. Donald that photo looks pretty good, I should be able to use that for a reference.
Mark when you do yours send me a photo. It would be great to see how it comes out. I think all the C1's out here have no lip. I'll be checking them all. Stewy
