C3 - How far should exhaust tips stick out?

I have a 71 and have new exhaust tips. Are they supposed to stick out passed the bezels? If so, how far out or how much of the tip should be exposed past the bezel?

Most original tips are about 1" past the rounded edge.

I like to see about 1/2-1'' past the top of the bezel on the top of the tip.

This is a question I never thought to ask. I too installed a new exhaust on my 68 and the new tips stiick out 4-5 inches and are at a slight angle outward. Do you all recommend cutting them off.

The '68, '69 tips do stick out from the exhaust bezel/valance quite a bit over the '70 to '72 styles tips. I've observed on most of the '68, '69's that were judged at the recent Tahoe regional meet, the tips extended beyond the bezel a good 3 1/2 to 4 inches.

I believe that the top portion of the 68-69 tip should be as clsoe to the trailing edge of the bumpers.

The 71 AIM shows a tab welded to the outlet pipe of the muffler that fit into the slit on the pipe of the exhaust tip.
Was that tab there to help locate the tip's clock-wise position only or did it help determine the tip's reveal too?

The tab(s) were there to enter the alignment notches cut into the factory original exhaust tips. I don't think reproduction tips have these notches and I don't believe the currently available reproduction exhaust pipes have the tabs.

Basically, the tab on the pipe entered the mating notch on the tip. This dictated the fore/aft position of the exhaust tip on the pipe AND set the CW/CCW orientation of the tip.
