LOTS of people are going to be outta work. I also saw that GM had over 600,000 employees in the mid 1970's and will be looking to cut back to around 60,000 by 2012, about 1/10 of their hey-day size.

I've been through two GM assembly plant closings. It's an emotional and gut wrenching experience for all involved.

I went through the closing of the Firestone plant in Decatur. It was like a 6 month funeral after they announced the closing. There are no winners in a situation like that only losers.

If you haven't been through at least one major restructuring in your career, you are damned lucky.

IBM got rid of about half its employees between 1990 and 1994 - around 200,000. After the buyout offers expired they resorted to various forms of walking the plank - transfers to places most people would not want to go or outright layoffs.

I saw the handwriting on the wall and took a buyout in 1991. I was pretty much fed up with rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, anyway, and was glad to get out with some cash in my pocket and my dignity intact!

I guess the closure of the Wilmington, DE assembly plant means that the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky will "die" as of the end of next month. That's too bad as the Solstice and Sky are among the most innovative of GM's current line-up.

The closure of Livonia Engine should not come as much of a surprise to anyone. GM canceled the Northstar replacement over a year ago and the Northstar was scheduled to go out of production after the 2010 model year. Except for the Escalade and, possibly, CTS-V, this must mean that future Cadillacs will all be V-6 powered.

I thought that the bailout plan wa supposed to BOOST the econmy! Not dismantle it! Manufacturing in the U.S.A. is a shadow of years past. The growing economies in the world revolve around manufacturing, not destroying it! Hold onto your boot straps, it's comming. (You can decide what "it" is.)

Spirited I know but sometimes spirit counts!

                  Have fun while it lasts.

I find the saddest part is the bogus politically controlled bankruptcy that has happened to the American Auto Industry for whatever reasons is that the bondholders were not first in line to get their money back as is traditional but that the Government and the UAW own most of GM and Chrysler. This will put a real damper on future bond investers putting their investments in corporate bonds and could really hurt industry in the future. Ed
