    Reba,

Interesting observation over a long period of time. I've asked this question over on the CF site. For those that have replied it appears that it does not matter whether an early build or late build or whether a '70 or '71 or '72 model. There seems to be a random pattern that shows chrome headed vs black oxide or phosphate coated were intermittingly used during the three model years.

It would be interesting to know how these screws were binned on the soft trim assembly section of the St Louis assembly line.

It would indeed, because if the install were totally random one might expect some black and some chrome on the same car.

As I recall, and it has been a long time since I had them out, there is a difference in the length of the screws as well. If I am right, that adds a further complication to the equation.

I think, along with asking the finish of the screws, one has to inquire about the heritage of the car. While it limits the sample size, cars with fewer owners might be the better source of data.

I guess if there is confusion on the instrument bezel--in the event of a tie--the person judging the car wins. They will be chrome--all five unless some other judges say black is Okie-Dokie.

          Paul,

You might want to look at the results of this subject over on the CF site, under the post heading '70 to '72 Owners need assistance. The results will surprise you.

If you change them it will probably make your car run hotter/cooler or make more hp. CF is not a very reliable forum to use for restoration information.
