Re: Source for correct C1 oil fill cap?

    Lee,
Here is my understanding of cap markings:
56 to 58: "OIL OIL" with a straight indentation between the text.
59 to early 61: "OIL OIL" with a half moon indentation between the text.
late 61 to 62: "OIL AC" with a half moon indentation between the text.
As far as rivits go, the one I believe on Roys cap appears to not be rounded (like a button head) or flat like the Gene Smith cap. It looks like it has a low spot in the middle. Which is like a number of original caps I have. I'll try and get a picture of one.

      Lee,
Here is what I think is the correct rivit and top configuration for a 56 thru 58 Corvette. The rivit I believe looks like Roys.
      I don't have a 59-60 cap, or at least I can't find it.

Re: Source for correct C1 oil fill cap?

Thanks to all the responses and a section in the Supplement section of N.Adam's book, I now know that what I need is a '59 or '60 version of p/n 1552719. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a good reproduction of this particular part, so I'll just have to keep looking for an original.

        Thanks for the help.

Keep looking or do what others have done... Dig up an original from a scrap yard car. Expect the top to be dented from prior owner 'push on' cycles.

Now, de-crimp the top cover from the base. Remove the top cover and gently tap out the dent(s). Then, re-assemble the cover to the base.

One word of caution here, finding that non-vented version of the oil cap is going to be CHALLENGING because most of the passenger cars used the vented version with their hydraulic vs. solid lifter engines...

Or if dents are small use BONDO then sand and repaint.

On my 62 the wire stuffing or whatever it's called is gone. It has the holes for venting but nothing in there. What was the material inside?

John, I believe in the original caps the "stuffing" is like steel turnings as from a lathe.
Some of the repros use a material similar to the copper or brass scrubing pads like my mother used to use.
It looks similar except it is not steel.

John, years ago I found abrasive pads at a large hardware store that was a very close match. I don't know if it is still available but worth a try. I have seen both steel and aluminum.

                  Good Luck!

Dollar General had the abrasion pads for a $1.25. Cut off a bit and stuffed it in. Good as new now. See pics.
