    Window installation

As I wait for my engine to come back from rebuild of rebuild. (we all know that road) , I am doing the things I should have been doing instead of golf.

Two questions. Car not painted except for door jam areas, (66 Convertible)

Door ends. Are the rivets and screws of the locking mechanism painted car color (sprayed at factory ?) or are they left bare?

Next question. (all parts have been restored/cleaned)

I have listed below the door window assembly sequence that I am going to use. Let me know if it makes sense.

1 Install locking mech and rods

2 Install regulator and lower track

3 Install metal channel (liners & bumpers)

    4 Vent window assembly (restored)

5 Paint car (door jams were done already)

    6 Door locks & handles

7 Upper window track with window & outer seal

    8 Interior door panel

Any thoughts on this sequence will be appreciated

    Jack

    Jack,

Thanks for letting me stop by and see your car. Can't help you with a C-2 window installation. I installed my C-1 windows and locking apparatus after the car was painted. I don't know how it was done at the factory, but I didn't have to worry about over spray of body color on the newly refurbished windows, etc.

      Jack -

The door lock assembly was installed prior to paint, so its attaching screws are painted; the portion that protrudes through the door and engages the striker was masked off.

All the rest of the door/glass hardware was installed after paint. The "Corvette Body" section in the Chassis Service Manual has lots of detail on door hardware installation, with detailed illustrations and photos.

        David,

Thanks for stopping by. Hope all will be well with you and don't hit any moose with your car.

          Thanks John,

I have the assembly manual, is the Chassis Service Manual a different book?

I have taken everything apart and cleaned and replaced needed parts, lots of gump after 43 years. Is my sequence reasonable?

I can't imagine doing a restoration without the Chassis Service Manual (or the Chassis Overhaul Manual either); both are available from the on-line store on this site ("NCRS Store" item in the blue bar at the top of the page). If you don't have the CSM, you're missing a LOT of valuable information and procedures.

              John,

Thanks for the reply. I do own the Service Manual. I bought it 37 years ago (owned car since 1969). The front cover fell off and I forgot the name of the book. I just wanted to make sure there was no special order of putting all the parts back in door.

One other question, when I took the latching mechanism off end of door, it was bedded in a puddy like substance. Is it the same as strip caulk, which I have?

              Thanks again,

              Jack

                Jack -

3M Strip-Calk is about as close as you'll find to the original sealer material for that application.

I have a 65 convert and I have been working on the door hardware this week.
I would suggest a couple of changes to your sequence

Install the lock cylinder, then outside door handle
Install the outside belt molding with the stapled on outside window seal
Then the regulator with the lower guide
                  Vent widow assy
Rear run channel guide (leave loose until you get the window in)
Glass assy with lower bracket attached but without the up and down stops

Install trim panel, handles knobs and cranks

                    John ,

                    Thanks for advice.

It seems that the biggest challenge will be aligning the doors. Do you get it close, then add weather strip and readjust? I have them on now, and without weather strip it is hard to center them.

                      The short answer is yes.

The door should be centered and flush before paint with the most antention to the hinge adjustments and striker shims. Don't want to revisit these after everything is painted. Add weight to inside of door that is same as glass and hardware to adjust hinges and striker.

Then after the car is painted, or at least the door openings, install the door weatherstrip and readjust striker. Then check again when the door is finished
