    C2 Electrical Problem

I have a 66 w/ small block and AC. I am having a problem starting the car. When I turn the ignition switch, all electric power to the car turns off. For example, if the door is open, the courtesty lights go out, and the engine does not turn over. I checked the battery cables, and they were secure to the battery posts. When I tried to rotate the negative cable clamp, the courtesy lights came back on. I had my wife turn the ignition switch while I tried to rotate the negative cable switch. the car eventually started, but the negative battery post was hot to the touch. I pulled the car back in the garage, and dissconnected the battery cables.

I have owned the car for over 4 years. The battery and battery cables have been in the car since I bought it. Is this just a bad battery, or do you recommend other checks?

    Thanks
    Frank

    Re: C2 Electrical Problem

If the negative cable connection is hot to the touch, it indicates a high resistance at that connection, you mention a switch, try removing and connecting the neg cable directly to the battery and see if your problem resolves. A good voltmeter should give you an idea of battery charge state, should be 13-13.5 volts under no load when charged, see how much the battery drops when you go to crank. Another big problem with A/C cars is the power feed from the engine compartment thru the bulkhead on the drivers side into the IP. That is a very marginal connection given the added current required by the Air Conditioning.

Clean your battery connections. Use the wire tool that does both the battery post and the cable terminal. Then apply some dielectric grease.
You may also need a new battery cable set. Corrosion will migrate up the cable from the terminal and be hidden by the insulation.
