    Hey Joel...or anyone...! A common thread seems to be to release the clutch disc to facilitate final alignmemt. Can this be done without taking the time to re-install all linkage to the pedal ??

      It's very hard to do it without having the clutch linkage connected. However, you have to eventually install the clutch linkage anyway. So, why not do it sooner rather than later? It really won't be in the way of anything.

        Ralph;

        Honestly, I have never released the clutch to install the tranny, but that's just how I do this. If you are pulling one out and replacing it, the clutch will stay aligned with all the pressure in place. Once you get the unit up there and through the throw out bearing, usually just a twist of the unit as a whole will get the splines aligned.. Once they are aligned, the "wiggle" methond will allow you to get the tranny up flush against the bell housing.. Pay heed to Joe's advice about not trying to pull the unit in with the bolts. It's realy not all that hard, just seems that way the first time or two. I use one of those Quik Lift contraptions, which is fairly low, so I muscle the unit up there without a jack.. I find that wearing mechanics glove makes it easier on the hands....

        If by chance you are swapping trannys, make sure your bell housing opening is the same size as your bearing retainer... Don't ask how I figured this out...my only hint is that I have a 1963!

        Have fun!

          Yeah, I am swapping transmissions ...just to finally install a correct dated M20 I've had for several years . I also put in new disc & PP ; but, only had 3300 miles on the old since 1989 ! ( Wish I had left that part alone .)
          Think I've figured out how to use a standard jack with the full-height lift...Bench-pressing that sucker multiple times is not my idea of a good time ! What do you think of the "new type" TO bearings ( with the non-metal collar ) ? I'm told they are an improvement in that there's less tendency to bind on the shaft .... but, sure looks different from original.....
