    Help with decoding Muncie numbers

I know my tranny is not original to the car, but out of curiosity I thought I'd check it to see where it came from. It's a Muncie close ratio 4-speed. That's the easy part. It appears to have some numbers on it that are in conflict with the "books". In particular, it has the 3885010 main case, but it has a date code of P0116. That would imply it is from a 70s car but I thought 70s used a different main case and that their date coding used letters. So I'm confused as to what this is.

I haven't got under the car yet to see the VIN stamping. Maybe that will help clear this up.

Can any of the tranny experts help me out?

    Thanks

    Bob

No confusion with what you`ve given. The "010" means 1966 or 1967 model years. The P0116 means January 16 th of 1966, as it would be P7A16 if it was from a 1967 model year. VIN derivative should be on the exact opposite side of the assembly date stamp.

Thanks for the reply Wayne. I think I see where my confusion came from. I thought that there was a "Model Year" digit used on the 66 trannys. Consequestly I was interpreting the P0116 as a 1970 Model year, Jan 16th.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

        Bob,
IF The VIN is in fact stamped on the tranny, the first three characters will indicate the plant where the tranny was installed (letter), and 2 numbers at the beginning of the stamped VIN.
Of those 2 numbers, one of them will be a 1(for Chev), 2(for a Pont), 3(for an Olds), 4(for a Buick). The other number will be the last number for the year model. Since the 010 case was ONLY a 66 or 67 case, then that other number will be a 6 or 7 for the year model of the car in which it was originally installed.

Thanks for the additional info Tom. I'm anxious to get up under there and read the VIN. I'm a little more familiar with the 67 stampings and I erroneously applied that standard to the 66.

Thanks again, I appreciate the education.

            Tom -

True, unless it's from a pre-'68 Corvette - they didn't use the "GM standard format" for the transmission VIN stamp.
