When We Were Young With Our Corvettes - Chapter #26

    Then in 1948, Steve Bilko

The construction of Dodger Stadium, which was completed in time for the LA Dodgers to host the Cincinnati Reds on opening day, April 10, 1962, was steeped in controversy

coldest place on earth up in the bleacher seats which seemed like a vertical climb. And hidden beneath the vast acreage of the parking lot was the almost forgotten community earlier known as Chavez Ravine.

    Juliet Prowse,

    Steve Bilko

You never stop teaching us youngsters! I never knew that my beloved Wrigley Field at Clark and Addison had a sibling in LA. I've always known that William Wrigley at one time owned Catalina Island and had strong connections to SoCal, I just didn't know about the "other" Wrigley Field. It was also interesting to learn about the Angels playing in Chavez Ravine for a few years until the Big A was built in Anaheim. Interestingly the Angels web site references that no hitter on May 5, 1962:
The official website of the Los Angeles Angels with the most up-to-date information on news, tickets, schedule, stadium, roster, rumors, scores, and stats.

Thanks again for entertaining us with your stories. They are great.

        Cheers,

We get a tad over 100,000 at our crazy Aussie rules game in the Melbourne Cricket Ground here. What type of capacity do you get in your stadiums over there Bill. MCG_stadium.jpg Stewy

I wouldn't like to be up top at the back in those stadiums. Stewy

You mean what we call the "nose bleed seats"?

Great story. I recall some of the controversy when the Dodgers moved. The people of Brooklyn never forgave, to this day, the O'Malley family.

                Thanks Bill.

                  Hi Bill,

Another great installment! It was a pleasure to meet you at the WI Regional this weekend.

Not to get off the subject too much - if you ever go to Wrigley field in Chicago, there are two "statues" - one of Harry Carey and the other Ernie Banks. My cousin was the sculptor of both of them.

Those are two great sculptures. Your cousin has some talent. Whoever did the engraving on the Ernie Banks statue needs to go back to school. Ask you brother about the apostrophe that was added a little late, and a little poorly to the "Let's play two!" quote on the statue. It would be fun to hear what he has to say.

                      Cheers
