    Re: Front suspension progress

Looks like you have your A-arm pivot bolts and washers painted black.

There has been some discussion not long ago that the entire A-arm including this hardware, was painted as an assembly.

However, Michaiel Brown, on a topic dated june17, stated the following:

A-Arm Pivot Bolts & Washers.............Natural (large flat washer natural, bolt and lock washer black phosphate)

    So which is correct?

Also, when I took off my large flat washer from my original, it looks like the back side of it(against the rubber) still had zinc plating, which could have been subsequently painted black.

I read the 67 TIM/JG and it said to paint those end bolts, washers etc black. That's what I did. Hopefully that wasn't wrong.

John, was the orange applied early to castings prior to some machining of the "pads"? All untouched originals do not ever appear to have any paint on those 4 machined pads. I assume they were to secure, locate the spindles for turning on a lathe or turret.

Just a couple of notes, finish on the springs does not appear to be normal (lighter than normal) paint? covering over forged finish on the struts, non-factory crimp on the brake hose, remember to use the large diameter washer at the top of the shock mount when you get there. About all I can see from the picture.

I agree, the control arm shafts, washers, bushings and bolts should be black. The control arm was painted as a complete assembly, minus ball joint.

Hope to see you at the Heartland Chapter meet this fall. I'll be there helping out. It's a nice venue!

Bill, you're right on the spring finish. I'm wondering about the brake hose though. Does any vendor supply the rubber lines with the correct crimp?

I'm not able to ID a specific vendor, "I'm working on a '65 which is a little different, but I used eBay and the pictures of what was being sold to procure the ones I needed.

                    Gene -

I can't document it, but I'd guess the orange paint was an inspection marking that indicated a good Brinell test to verify the heat-treat prior to finish machining.
