    63-67 Alternator Stator Color Judging

Just curious, how did the alternator stators with black painted center ribs judge at Bloomington?

Did anyone loose points for either black or caramel?

    Michael,

    Inquiring minds want to know.

    Others don't care, apparently!

I probably should have asked if anyone showed up at the BG event with a black stator instead of caramel.
We had a very interesting discussion on this subject right here on the DB a while back and I think almost everyone agreed that it was supposed to be black, not caramel.

I have no idea what showed up at BG, but I know at least one National Team Lead thinks black is acceptable. I am not sure if he thinks caramel is wrong however, or if both would be ok. My guess would be that he'd think both were acceptable.

Can someone post a picture (for the new guy here) of where the heck these ribs are?

I just had my alternator completely rebuilt, including the correctly colored and stamped diodes. I'm hoping the guy that did the work also took this "rib" thing into consideration.

Chris, Picture would be nice but since no one posted one and I don't know how here goes.. Between the halves (front and rear) of the alternator there is a stator that you nicknamed "ribs". The stator on 63's should be black in color.
Since I learned that info from Hanson quite a while ago I have looked at many junker alternators for midyears. If there was any paint left at all on the stator it was black. JD

I found one that was rusty.

John -- here's a pic (also see thumbnail below for close-up) I sent Michael a while ago. It's out of a fairly decent 1100696 5G7 42 amp; on the auto-load pic you can even see what's left of the red ink stamp near the R/F connection.

The black paint is flaking off the exposed 3 ribs of the laminations.

Hey wow, now THERE'S a long thread with lots of detail.

Here are some pictures of my newly restored 327/350 horse TI alternator for an early 67. I wonder how many points I'll get dinged for this. (the more and more I learn about my car, the more and more I realize I'm close, but not exactly right with a very small detail)

Chris, the rear needle bearing is incorrect. INA bearing should be a Torrington. In 1967 INA was not even making needle bearings.

How about posting a photo of a correct Torrington bearing so we all know what to look for....

Is the Torrington bearing the center part? (I don't know hardly anything about alternators)
