    58 Charcoal formula

Does anyone have a Basecoat formula for 58 Charcoal? My PPG supplier told me today that he only has the formula for Charcoal in lacquer. The owner of the car really wants a more durable BC/CC finish on his car, but does not ant to deviate from the original color any more than necessary.

    John,

I'm also in need of the basecoat formula for '58 Charcoal. Have you had any luck with the BC/CC formula?

    Regards, Alfonso

      John,

I'd suggest checking with Tim Mickey.
Given the issues he had with lacquer on a charcoal 58 in the past year he may have what you need.

I have a PPG BC/CC formula for charcoal that I used on my 58 that was painted in 97. I don't know how correct the color is because I have never seen another charcoal 58 in person. It seems as though every one paints them back red ! Its a pretty color looks different inside than it does under the sun.

I'll try to add an attachment for the formula. It was PPG's Deltron 2000.

        Stan.

          John,
Go to your local body shop and see if they have a set of "Color Map" books.
With these books you can look for the color that most closely matches Charcoal and then cross reference the Color Map number to a formula.
Sometimes the formula is for single stage, sometimes for BC/CC.
The other option is to find a supplier with a colorimeter and if you have a panel that you can take to the supplier he can look at it with the colorimeter and provide a formula.
This method can be successful but like any paint you need to do test panels of the formula to see what it really looks like.
Another thing that can be done is to use the Deltron formula and then clear it. I have seen some 15 year old cleared single stage paint jobs that look great.
Compatibility of the base and the clear needs to be tested prior to doing a large job as all paints are not created equal.

We talked at length to the PPG factory guys and they said that they had never converted the formula from DDL to any of the basecoats. We tried the color matching camera, and it came out too muddy. I looked through the color books for hours, and never found a color that I thought had the same violet tone that the original Charcoal had. The owner of the car finally decided to just go with Lacquer, as he wanted the correct color above all else. We have all the removable panels shot already, and should have the body in color in a couple of days.
