69 & 70 Corvette Chrome Oil Filler Cap question

For those who have the ORIGINAL chrome oil filler cap on their 69 and 70 Corvetttes with the 350 engine, is there a "SMC" logo stamped on the cap as well as the large letter "S" on the rivet?

Pictured is what I believe to be an original 1969 chrome oil filler cap with only the large letter "S" on the rivet that came with a set of 69 Aluminum valve covers (casting # 3932418 without drippers) that I purchased in 1979. The chrome cap had traces of rust "bleeding" through the chrome plating even back in 1979. I recently cleaned off the rust with Never-Dull but there are many tiny specks of rust are still visible. Is my cap an original or was is replaced sometime between 1969 and 1979?

The chrome cap with the "S" and with the different size rings, or depressions, is the current cap available, GM # 1625763, which is a replacement for the GM # 3851735 cap which was used on 69-81 Corvettes and 69-75 Z28's.

What year did you buy your 70 Corvette LT1? Your cap looks exactly like mine.

The car was built (Trim tag date) Jan 29, 1970. It arrived at the dealer Feburary 15, and I took delivery February 29, 1970.

Cap looks the same as the original one on my 70.

Based on the fact that your cap is the original (Jan. 29, 1970, build date) then I would say my cap is an original one as well but from either a 69 Corvette or 69 Z28.

I'm not the original owner. The car has been undergoing a body off over the past 2 years. This is my first real c3 project as most of my other vettes were c2s. Trying to get as close to original as possible with all the various details. Car is matching from the engine, trans, rear, carb, alternator, starter etc. Hope to make the Jenkintown meet in Oct.

I would concur, however we always have to remember our sample size is very small. I doubt we will ever get a proper sample size, however.

Joe,
Does the cap look nice and shiny or is there some rust bleeding through the chrome. The original caps were flash chromed which I think is a "cheap & dirty" chroming process. If the cap is 39 years old it should look 39 years old under normal circumstances.

I know that our sample size is small but the fact that you know that your cap is original for your 70 Corvette and it matches up with my cap means a lot to me. It is not just an opinion, it's a fact.

I looked at my cap again and it looks just like yours and Terrys'. Upon close inspection there is some rust bleeding through, but nothing that detracts from what I believe to be an original cap. Hope this helps.

I am posting a picture of what I believed was 1970 CAP , until I saw the others posted here. Anyone seen one like this? It has the "S" , but no ring on the outer dia of the cap

It looks the same as my cap and looks about 39 years old. What do you mean by "no ring on the outer dia of the cap"?
