Exactly what is convertible top frame adjustment?

I'm getting a new top put on my '67 as I type this and the guy who is doing it has been in the business for 25 years. He insisted that I not remove the old ragtop, since he didn't want disturb the "original" fit when he installs the new Al Knoch top.

Here's what I don't get...this existing top is not the original top, so what would keep the installer of the #2 top from messing with the frame adjustment back in the 80's? It's not my call but I think this guy should readjust the top anyway. I doesn't seem like you have to be a Rocket Scientist to do this or am I wrong? PT

The adjustments have more to do with how the frame fits the car than it does on how the top fits the frame. If the windows fit and it fits the windshield header, do not mess with the adjustments.

It's what I've been fighting with for two years. My top frame does not match up to the windows properly or seal to the windshield. The frame adjustment is totally about the steel bows and not the canvas. If the fit of your weatherstrip/window is not what you think it should be, the frame needs to be made to fit before the material is stretched...

If only it were so that the frame would stay in alignment with the windows. Unfortunately, on convertibles, the body over time sags and the relative position of the windows yesterday may not be the same today. I replaced my top back in the mid-70's and did not know what I was doing. I rehabed the entire frame including the tacking strip in the front bow. I had to remove the pads as they were just about to fall apart anyway. When you do that, you lose your bow spacing. My rear bow (over the rear window) is still about 3/4" to 1" off. I have re-adjusted my side windows and frame mountings many times, but still have some gap at the backs of the side windows. No, it isn't rocket science, but it's no walk in the park either.
