Bill --- It was a running change at the St.Louis assembly plant. If no one comes up with the date or VIN, I can dig into my Tech Service Bulletins tomorrow. I believe a definite VIN # is quoted for the mounting method change.

Bill, as wayne mentioned, there was a TSB that showed the date the change from transmission mounted to frame mounted shifter occured. That date is 21 March 66.

are the tail shafts and shifter bodies the same? is it just a matter of what mount you use?

tailshafts and shifters same. you'll just need the bracket that mates the shifter to the frame if you want the 2nd design mount method.mike

Tradeoff was more precise shifting with the trans mounted unit, less vibration with the crossmember mounted unit. The crossmemer in the frame will not have the holes added for the mount if the car was equipped with the trans mounted shifter, at least until very close to the changeover.
