Ed Korte from "numbers match" has the tools and stamps you need. He has an ad in the driveline. His number is 520-544-9209. I have used him before and he can help you with the assembly numbers as well. Hope this helps. Jeff

If your engine was matching numbers and original to the car, your builder just cost you over $20K + in value to the car.

A restamped block will certainly be noticed by an educated buyer.

Even if it wasn't original to the car they significantly impacted the value of the engine in and of itself.

      That's a shame.

This is not a job I would do myself if I had any interest in "getting it right."

Seriously consider having the engine shop pay to have this damage "fixed" by a professional. There are a few people out there who can resurface the block, stamp the numbers, and end up with a very satisfactory result.

If you just want "numbers" is a whole different thing than if you want it done right.

Aside from the ethical questions it raises, it's a science in and of itself with correct broach marks (which are difficult to reproduce), Correct Fonts, typical wear on frequently used characters, Gang Stamp evidence in both angle alignment and depth of strike, and anomolies evident within both the engine assembly Plant, and final assembly plant.

I'd hold the Engine builder responsible as well except for the minor detail that they told you it needed to be decked before hand.

              Legally they wouldn't be negligable.

Personally, I would have the builder sign an affidavit stating what happened with notorization before I re-stamped it.

Once the numbers are gone, there will always be a shadow of doubt cast on its originality.

Restamping it will solidify the doubt.

              (personal opinion)

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

There are a couple engine block supply companies that advertise in Hemmings Motor News that offer stamping services and rent stamping tools. I don't have any experience with them, but have seen their ads. Look under the "Corvette Parts" section. Tim

Presumably the broach marks are gone, taking the stamped characters with it. Restamping just the alpha numeric data without having a typical pad surface would look worse than a completely blank pad.

Even if it was re-broached and restamped, a comparison with original cars made just before and just after yours will reveal this as a 'suspect' engine.

Leave it alone, and go after the engine shop for compensation.

                    Just
FYI I did a 66 BB car for a friend and the block need decked. My friend decked the block but left the pad untouched. With the head on it is not detectble.

                      Steve,

Do you have any pictures of the pad before it was decked? When I purchased my LT1 last year, the first thing I did was take a couple hundred pictures of it from all angles including the engine bay, chassis, interior, exterior, pad, trim tag, cert label, etc. If you did, and you get a certified doc from the mechanic, it might just help some at resale.
