Would like any information on painting the original magnesium valve covers on my 1985. The covers have areas where the paint has come off and also where the paint has blisters.

Re: 1985 valve covers
Jim,
Having stripped a set of these (not necessarily recommended) I think they were powder coated, or received an early "primitive" version of that. You may be best off looking in that direction.

Re: 1985 valve covers
Mid America sells a rattle can version that comes out pretty close to the original finish. I did this previously on an 87 and it came out looking very close to the originals. I have a can I purchased intending to do the valve covers on my 85. Sold the 85 and still have the new can. If you want it let me know.- Top

Re: 1985 valve covers
Patrick I do not plan on stripping the valve covers. My plans are to sand the blisters and the feather the edges of where the paint has come off and spray the complete cover.
I don't know how magnesium metal will like the sanding.
Paul, thanks, I have already purchased a rattle can of paint for the 85's valve covers from a Corvette parts vender.- Top

Re: 1985 valve covers
Be very careful with anything that is magnesium. If you use the wrong chemicals the fumes are lethal. Green smoke pours up from the casting.
One time I tried to clean a magnesium disc that is glued to a diaphragm on the old fuel injection units. Major screw up. The white vinegar quickly ate holes in the magnesium. JD- Top
