I need to reemove and replace the amplifiers behind the speakers in the doors of my 88 Corvette. It appears to be almost impossible to do without removing the widow and door guts. Does anyone know of a step by step procedure or a place or person to consult to remove and replace the amplifiers? I have the 88 shop manual and the electrical troubleshooting guide which are not helpful. Please help!

By "shop manual" do you mean the GM Service Manual as published and sold through Helm, Inc.? If so, I'm very surprised that it does not contain step-by-step instructions for speaker removal.
If you have some other manual, you need to get the above-referenced.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 88 Bose radio amplifier removal
I have the original 88 Corvette GM service manual. There is no section on amplifier removal. Perhaps there are more detailed manuals but the one I have is useless for this repair. The door panels and speakers are easy to remove. The problem is the amplifier is contained in a box behind the speaker. The speaker hole is too small to remove the box. The box has about ten screws that hold it together. The box can be taken apart revealing four screws that hold the amplifier. All these screws can be removed through the speaker hole but getting it all put back together through the speaker hole is going to be a bear if not impossible. I was looking for someone who has "been there done that" for advice.- Top

Re: 88 Bose radio amplifier removal
If you do a web search for "Bose Radio Repair" you will come up with several businesses that perform the amplifier repair, and at least one that has detailed instructions for removal of the speakers from a C-4. You do not have to remove the glass from the doors, but there is a little bit of technique involved. If you can't find it, drop me an email and I'll see if I kept the info from when I did mine.Bill Clupper #618- Top

Re: 88 Bose radio amplifier removal
Greg:
When I replaced my bose speaker Assemblies on my 86, I raised the windows (it doesnt really matter if there up or down, but I found it easier with them up) removed the door panels, Removed all the fasners that hold the aluminum inner plate (don't remove the plate out of the door, just move it around so you can get the speaker out). Disconnect the speaker assemblies connector and remove the four screws that hold it in place and push back on the inner plate and remove the speaker assembly. This is the process that worked for me. Like you said Greg the shop manual has no removal procedure, my 86 manual does not.
Also Greg, I sent my speaker assemblies to Bose's automotive division for repairs.
Here is there number:
Automotive Sound
Within the US
Call 1-800-231-2673
They rebuilt my spaeaker assemblies with the latest amplifiers and speakers and test them for proper operation. See I purchased new speaker/amplifier assemblys (front and rear) from GM and they didn't sound good at all. They sounded tinney. When I talked to Bose, they told me that the assemblys you get from GM are 20 years old and the amplifers and speaker starting to break down from age. When I got them back from Bose, I was amazed of how clear and smooth the sound was.
Greg, I hope this helps you.
Good luck- Top
