    Wiper Door Override Switch

How is the wiper door override switch on a '68 grounded? Wiring diagram shows a black ground wire at this switch but there's only one terminal on the original switch.

    Joel,

Not sure if I can answer your question, plus mine is a '69, but I took this pic a couple of months ago and it may help.

      Pat,
Thanks for the photo - interesting that your switch has two terminals and wired, but the original switch in the '68 I'm working on has only one terminal and one wire, brown with a white stripe. I bought a replacement switch and it has two terminals. The wiring diagrams in the AIM and CSM show the brown and white wire as well as a black wire leading to ground. Doc Rebuild's wiring guide only shows the brown and white wire. Guess I'll make up and fit a ground wire and see what happens...

I think 69 is one year only switch, 2 prong, with A/C is different , 69 has nylon rod for the knob to attach and it breaks off,
You should match up you old part to the new one

Joel - here some pics of my 20 May 68 Coupe - bubba has been there; not sure if he got down here (I would think not),

            Eric,
That ground detail shown in your last picture looks unusual. That style screw is not what I would expect, and the ground wire terminal looks unusual also. My guess is that Buba has been there.

              Erik,
Thanks for the great photos. Your switch looks exactly like my July build convertible's, even the terminal tab is bent about the same way! I'm still confused as to how the override switch is grounded -- or is it grounded? Wiring diagram shows a black wire leading to a grounding point. Where does the ground wire on your switch mounting bracket originate?

                Tom,
I've not been able to find an original-style round single-prong '68 switch; most suppliers list a square, two-prong switch, like the one in Pat's photo, as a replacement switch for '68-'69. My original question was whether the single-prong switch is grounded and if so, how. Thanks for your input.

Ooops! Pat's photo does not show a square switch; his is round with two prongs. I saw the photo of a square switch elsewhere. My apologies!

The 68 metal single pole switch is grounded via the switch body. With the knob turned right, the electrical path is through the switch body and then through the grounded bracket.

Thanks, Bryan, for clarifying how the switch is grounded. This whole thing started out because the wiper override light is always on when the battery is connected. Also my wiper motor works find when I apply 12V directly to it, but when it's in the car, nothing happens when I use the wiper switch. I started replacing components hoping to find the problem by process of elimination but haven't been able to find the correct '68 switch. I'm guessing that the two-pole switch that is sold as its replacement would require a separate ground?

                        Joel,
Yes. The two prong should just be a simple single pole switch. One switch terminal should hook to the wiper wire from the harness. The other terminal can use a female terminal connector and then ground it to the chassis.

The service switch should be in the normally closed position.

                          Bryan,
Thanks again for the added info on the two-prong switch. Before I made up a grounding connection for the switch, I wanted to confirm that was indeed what it needed. Off to the garage to continue the battle!!
