Joe, Delmo Johnson informed me that the RH fill modification was the creation of Dick Doane - to get the mechanics out of the line of fire during fillups.

I don't doubt that..but you know it didn't occur to me until recently..only 3 cars were ever fitted this way 1957 #3, #4 and P3. After 57 they went back to the center fill tank.

I think the low center of gravity of the side filler neck and the tall fuel tank and venting posed issues.

Refueling wasn't a high-tech operation at Sebring in '57 - it was done from 5-gallon cans of Amoco with a big funnel in the filler neck. Photo below is Juan Fangio, who won with Jean Behra in a Maserati 450S; they were pitted next to us, and you can see one of the Amoco-provided cans on the floor.

Got tired of lugging those cans from the Amoco truck and pump to our pit stall, then taking them back for more; fortunately, our 1100cc Cooper-Coventry Climax got 20mpg at race speed, and only used 42 gallons to run 159 laps (827 miles - we finished 18th overall, 2nd in Class behind Colin Chapman in a Lotus-Climax).

Joe, Would love for you to embelish on your quoted statement. How did that comment get passed over...?

Waiting with baited breath, whatever that is.

Out of the blue today while talking to a veteran NCRS Restorer contributor from years ago who has owned many important Corvette cars, parts and artifacts ..he tells me about having the original 1953 Corvette VIN tag for car #1.

Since I don't have permission to reveal who it is on line..I won't.

I have not seen the item personally but I have no reason to disbelieve the statement as this person is not a braggert nor feels it necessary to showboat.

So now if the #1 chassis that was up for sale not to long ago is real and this tag is real and the 1953 prototype body that exists in Tulsa but clearly not necessarily the body from #1..we never the less have some very important archives of this hobby we love so much.

Maybe one day a collector will pull these items together for presentation.

You and I both know that sometimes the claimed item is nothing and the item you just tripped over is really important.

It just happens that way and it takes special circumstances to understand what just happened.

Sometimes it just takes the pieces of the puzzle to present themselves in a more understandable way.

                Today I learned many things.

                Kindest Regards,

                joe

Me thinks this one falls in the "nothing" category!
