Paul, I suggest the fire wall harness plug in connector. This connection is most often the problem. The contact prongs may have some slight corrosion that inhibits connection.

        Paul,

Check the archives as there are lots of posts (including mine) regarding this common issue. My 66 has only a modest 1/8" needle deflection no matter what electrical load. I tried to fix it and just live with it now.
The ammeter is actually a very sensitive voltmeter. Disconnect the plug at the back of the ammeter and check for voltage to ground on each leg. Should have 12 volts. That will tell you if you have an open connection at the firewall connector.

Also another check ( learned from the archives) is use a AA battery and flash a momentary voltage across the terminals of the ammeter. Just a quick touch as you don't want to ruin the meter and it should deflect the meter. If the needle doesn't move the meter is defective.

Hope you are more successful than I have been

        Randy

PS, a 1/2V source will deflect the ammeter to approximately 40A on the scale without the danger of PEGGING the meter like a 1.5V battery is capable of doing...
