      John,

I loved my grandfather as you loved yours, and I mean no disrespect, but:

why were the passengers screaming and yelling?

What was he doing to them?

      Was he a poor driver?

        Get it?

        Asleep at the wheel.

You set-it up perfectly with the Olds, 4 Door "Saloon" comment.

Oh well, that's why I have a day job.

Your night job probably involves standing up in front of a brick wall.

            Re: Roadster

going back to the "horse buggy" i would say it is time for an update of the term to fit the times. i have always cosidered a roadster as a 2 seat car with no top up. i find it interesting that i noticed the term used twice and maybe more when i read the restorer this morning. if i remove my top, which is never up even when i wash it, and take off my window cranks can i call her a roadster? why should such a great name be retired to the ages as fewer "roadsters are seen by the public on the road?

If one "expands the definition of a term" where does it stop? As it is, if the definition of "roadster" were as you suggest then ark-like 60's Cadillac convertibles would be "roadsters". Mini-Cooper convertibles would also be "roadsters". Even "Smart Car" convertibles would be "roadsters".

The next thing you know, someone will be saying that "T-Top" or removable roof panel type cars are "roadsters", too. Then, most 68 to the present Corvettes, as well as many other cars, will become "roadsters", too.

                Re: Roadster

i'd say it could stop at a 2 seater car with the top down which none of the cars you listed are. i do not implie just any covertable is a roadster. when i take out my side pipe L72 for a run on a nice day with the top down it sure feels like a "roadster to me" by definition my Kabota is a roadster. just kidding.

                  Re: Roadster

I think we all agree the correct terminology is "Convertible" (as coined by GM when the car was produced) but the terms "roadster", "Drop Top", "Rag top", are slang, and therfore neither correct, nor incorrect.

This is like correcting someone because they used the term "Rag Top".

It's not a "rag top"........ It's a "convertible"........ .........Alrighty then Mr. uppidy pants.

A Smart Car convertible is a 2 seater. Or, how about an old Mercury Capri convertible or a new generation Thunderbird?

The word "roadster" is listed as a noun in any dictionary. It is NOT classified as slang.

There is no word listed for "droptop"; however, the term "drop top" can be found to mean "A rhyming colloquial form derived from the fact that the roof (top) of the car drops". A colloquialism is a synonym for slang.
