1963 steering box

I am restoring a 1963 chassis and probably have a later steering box. Any ideas on what to look for in a correct steering box for a 1963? Any specific numbers to look for?

Jack, there has been some debate over this in the past. There is a good deal of information in the archives, use the search option.

My belief is there we two boxes, but they all has a cast number in the top 5666723. The 3 could be followed by a one or two digit number. Mine has a 3 but in the archives there are pictures of 43 and 55. This is the typical first design. The second design had the cast number as well as CHECK and LUBE with arrows pointing to a bolt. There is an S on the side for Saginaw.

I believe the 63/64 JG says that there is NO cast number on the top if CHECK LUBE is not there, I do Not think I agree with this.

I dug through my files to find a cover of a 64-66 I did, I'd have o search some more to see exactly which one this is from




Here is one from a 63 Z06 that I believe is correct, I didn't black out the bolt heads or put any inspection marks on it, left that for the owner to do.
