I am doing a restoration on my 70. I have interior out of car and was cleaning up the wiring and replacing firewall insulation. I noticed all 3 vacuum lines for the headlight door control have a break in them just after they pass thru the firewall grommet and into the interior. Is that normal? One of the hoses has another break in it just as it enters the 'T'. The hoses look like original GM, but am wondering if these hoses might have been replaced at one time. Steve

Re: vacuum hoses for headlights
Terry, I mean there is a coupling at a point very close to the firewall grommet. All three have the coupling. One of them has another coupling where it comes to a 'T'. All of these couplings are inside the interior. Is that the way the factory did it? Similarly, one of the hoses coming off my ac vacuum control mechanism on the console has a coupling on it, It is only a few inches away from the vacuum switch on the console. Steve- Top

Re: vacuum hoses for headlights
Sure, see below. The left side of the first picture shows the bundle of hoses. You can see a splice in two of the three hoses in that picture. The third hose is behind the two that you can see. Splice is in same location. The second picture shows the second splice that is only in one hose. This is the hose that goes to a 'T' behind dash.
The last picture shows hose for ac control - the hose with a green stripe has a splice in it. Attachment is accomplished with brass tube.
I assume these splices are not factory, but thought I would check. I am trying to do a reasonable cost restoration. Not sure if that is possible! If something is original and in good condtion, I am leaving it alone. So before I change the hoses, I thought I would check. Steve- Top

Re: vacuum hoses for headlights
It looks to me like pictures 1 & 2 are original splices. After all the inside the car vacuum harness has to join the underhood harness some way, and they certainly didn't feed all those hoses through the hole in the fiberglass.
I am not so sure about the last picture. Patrick and I had a stimulating discussion about brass/copper colored hoses in the vacuum harness. In spite of his best efforts I am still not convinced -- but it is a subject I hope we get a chance to revisit in the future.Terry- Top

Re: vacuum hoses for headlights
Thanks guys. Since it sounds like the headlight hoses are original and not in bad shape, I will just wipe them down and leave them alone. Any comments on the brass tube that is used to splice the ac vacuum line (3rd picture), let me know. thanks, steve- Top
