    66 L79 Pulley Question

After reading and searching several posts...I am still confussed.

    I am rebuiling a 66 L79 with no P/S or Air or Brakes. Just a base L79.

My question is....what is the proper water pump and balancer pulley for a non power car.

My logic says single groove buy after looking at catalogs and reading...things are pointing to a two groove harmonic pulley.

Can someone shed some light and direct me to the correct setup for my car?

Todd, Check out this picture that was posted a few days ago. This is a 1966 L-79 and clearly shows two groove pulleys and the location of the dedicated water pump/crankshaft non adjustable belt.

Characteristics of the factory correct/original water pump should be called out in your copy of the '66 JG book...

I agree with Tim. There was quite a debate about this belt and pulley setup for 66 L79 here a few years ago. In the end, most everyone agreed that these engines had deep groove double pulleys with the C/shaft-W/Pump belt in the rear groove.

Todd also consider the advantage with a 2 groove if you lose the alt belt, at least you'll get home without the car overheating. Bill

L-79 Water pump pulley # 3770245 (7-1/8") deep grove. They are on ebay fairly often. This is a twin belt one for alternator-crank-water pump and one captured for crank and water pump.

There is a very good 1966 small-block pulley article in the spring 2009 NCRS Restorer. It explains in depth with photos and part numbers.

Bob is right about that article, members - Mark Gorney & Jim Williams answered every question one could ask about pulley aplications on a 327 Corvette built in 1966. They cover everything from part number, size and number of belts. I have been gathering parts for a spare engine for my 66 L-79 and found there artilce answered every question I had about correct pulleys.

                  Michael,
I remember that debate. I always wondered how that got started. I am the second owner of a 66 L-79 with the captured belt and I know the original owner didn't monkey with this car at all and every base L-79 I ever judged had the same configuration. Then out of the blue comes this single belt theory. Makes me wonder what will be in the new super duper 66 JG.

I've never seen a no power L79 line up their alternator belt using the outer groove. You can't argue the picture but if you've ever had a L79 with the alternator running off the outer groove I'd like to see it.

Greg you are right my outer belt is the water pump/crank. Inner belt: water pump/crank/alternator.

                          Greg -

Interesting observation - the photo (taken on the line at St. Louis) shows the captive belt on the rearward groove, but every photo I have in my files of base '66 L-79's shows the captive belt on the forward groove and the WP/Crank/Alt belt on the rearward groove.

I have a 1966, 350HP, no options car, I have owned since 1967. The car is mostly untouched. with 44K and the captive belt is forward, the rear belt connects water pump, crankshaft, and the alternator.

Agreed, I have a '67 no power L-79 with the correct pulleys and the alternator belt must go on rear groove and the captive belt on the outer groove. I think '66 and '67 are the same. Everyone tells me this is wrong but here is a photo from Noland Adams Vol. II with the captive belt on the outside groove. PT
