69 Washer Pump Problem Keeps on Pumping

I turn the wipers on and the washer pump is pumping fluid all the time. I disconnected the solenoid, removed it, and ran the wipers and the fluid just keeps on pumping out.

I have most of my interior out so I just propped up the bezel that holds the windshield wiper (WW) switch and ran a ground. Could the WW switch be bad and tell the pump to keep on pumping?

    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Pat

        (1) The washer control carousel is broken and the washer pump can't park.

        (2) Someone worked on the washer pump and re-assembled the solenoid to pump carousel inappropriately FORCING the pump to fail to park after one caroursel revolution.

        (3) The washer solenoid has failed in its energized/engaged position.

        (4) The washer solenoid's return spring is disconnected or has broken.

Then, there's your suggestion that the solenoid is somehow being continuously energized.

The easy answer here, is to (A) understand how the washer pump works (solenoid pulls the pump's parking arm off the top step of the carousel and the carousel makes ONE revolution with the pump enaged which returns the parking arm to top step of carousel to park the pump), then (B) remove the snap-on plastic cover from the washer pump and take a look-see at what the pump drive mechanics are actually doing...

If my text is confusing, then just find any other similar car from that era with a washer pump, remove the plastic cover and watch it work. You'll understand RIGHT QUICK how it's supposed to function!
        Jack,

A few questions about your suggestions, my numbers correspond to your numbers. Bear with me I'm a novice with these pumps.

        1) Are you saying the pump has to park to stop pumping?

        2) I did buy the pump used several years ago, and I don't know the history.

        3) I have a pic (see attached) of a solenoid, but I think that controls the fluid to the headlamps. I just want to be clear that there are two solenoids. One for the wipers, and the other is for the headlamps.

        4) Looking at the pics in the service manual I see the spring that returns drive pawl into the park position.

I'll take the cover off and have a look.

        Thanks,

        Pat

          Ed,

I believe I see the 1/8 hole your talking about, but I don't see info regarding alignment in the service manual. Is this alignment documented in the service manual? If so, what page?

          Thanks,

          Pat

THANKS for looking at the service literature to see if you could get the gist of my text! Folks will bend over backwards on this board to help those who've bought the books, tried to wade through them, and aren't unwilling to flip pages...

Jack - the service manual for other car models pumps show when the drive pawl is in the park position, but not for this pump. Can you offer any additional info on when it's in park or is this just a matter of watching the pump in action to determine the park position?

              Thanks again,

              Pat
