64 Aluminum water pump #3824059

    64 Aluminum water pump #3824059

    Have never seen an aluminum Water pump on a 327 midyear engine, but this part numbered pump keeps showing up on ebay. I am not interested in buying just curious, if they were ever used.

    Pumps like this show up from time to time. As far as I can determine, they were an over the counter performance part..... if you knew to ask for it.

    They did have one (in)famous application, however. The first design of these pumps (the one pictured is 2nd design) was used on the aluminum small blocks in the Grand Sports.

      competition products had them on sale for $50. the GM numbers were ground off. CP had a lot of this type of GM stuff for sale

        I can't read the part number on the pump but if it is actually 3824059 that's about a 1963-issued part number. However, no PRODUCTION small blocks, Corvette or otherwise, used such a waterpump at that time. The first use of an aluminum waterpump on any Corvette PRODUCTION engine was 1984 and that waterpump did not use the 3824059 casting.

        I realize that some of you will say that the first use of an aluminum waterpump on a Corvette engine was the 67-69 L-88 or the 1969 ZL-1. However, PRODUCTION versions of those engines did not use an aluminum waterpump. Some SERVICE versions of these engines built in very late 1969 or early 1970 were the first to be equipped with an aluminum waterpump.

          The presence of the second, upward facing, threaded boss is a conclusive indication that it's a 3824059. No other pump that I've ever seen is so configured.

          The earliest one I've seen was cast in '62.



          There were lots and lots of them made in '65 and '66.










          I've never seen a pump cast in '64. It's as if a few might have been made for the Grand Sport program and then, as an afterthought, they were made available over the parts counter in the mid-'60s. I don't know this to be true, but it's entirely consistent with what I've observed..

            Jim,
            If I had the one dated 6/27/66 on my 66 L-79 that sure would make a fun judging session.

              I can appreciate the humor in this.... it'd torque the meaning of "matching numbers" somewhat.

              Unfortunately, the date can't be easily seen once the pump is installed because it's on the back side of the casting:
