67 small block engine bolt finishes

I'm wondering what finish the bolts should be on the alternator support brackets. Here is what I have so far.

I don't know mid-years, but that water pump gasket needs some work IMO.

        Yup.
Needs to be cut down and should be orange just like the rest of the engine.
Also shouldn't have that sealant visible.

          Chris,

Your car is looking great, on my 67 the alternator brace to exhaust manifold bolt is M headmarking, grade five (three radial lines), and I believe got a spritz of silver to look like zinc.

The lower alternator bolt is grade five RBW headmarking and got the same spritz of silver.

Check your judging guide as there are no lockwashers on the water pump bolts except the bolt holding the adjusting brace. Also, use a lockwasher on the brace to exhaust manifold and I believe no lockwasher on the lower alternator bolt in the front.

The bottom bolt that goes through the lower alternator bracket into the exhaust manifold should be orange - it came as part of the (painted) engine assembly.

              John,

I have no reason to doubt you but without exhaust manifolds on the engine how could that bolt have been there for painting.

                Tim -

Point well taken, and I stand corrected - the lower alternator bracket it goes through was there when the engine was painted, but the exhaust manifolds went on afterward, with that bolt. The bolt should be unpainted.

                  So, to summarize:

Three bolts in the lower alt support bracket.

The one nearest to the centerline of the block should be orange.

The other two should be (unpainted / black / silver)???

Re: 67 small block engine bolt finishes

Chris, I think it is correct to say all three are plated. The bolt at the water pump is called out in the AIM so it's installed at ST Louis with a lock washer. There are no other lock washers on water pump bolts.

The bolt for the bracket to exhaust manifold is plated, also, the bolt for the bracket to lower alternator mounting.
