    Run flats SUCK

Have a 06 C6 and the run flats suck in more ways then others have stated in the past .
First they ride hard and are noisy, Having hard stiff side walls is what makes them run flats but as I found out they will also bend the wheel, three of the four of my GM chrome wheels were bent on my Corvette when I had new Toyo tires put on . I live in left Ca. Where the roads suck having pot holes . The walls of the run flats are so hard that they bend the wheel if you hit a pot hole I found out . The worst was the right front wheel which also caused the tire lining to wear through (see pic)
So I was wondering how many other owners have had this happen to them!
By the way the Toyo are 75% quitter and the ride is softer then those shi**ty run flats . If GM offered me FREE run flats for life I would never put them on. Your opinions!!

Let me introduce you to a friend who lost an arm and a leg while she was changing a flat along the highway.

They are not for everyone, but they have some advantages.

If it is any consolation, the C6 run-flats are not as stiff as the C5. Consider getting a tire plug kit and small (cigarette lighter) air compressor.

I have heard many over on the forum say run-flats run noiser, so I agree they probably are...I haven't changed mine yet, so I have no reference. If you have Z51 like mine, I believe the tread they use is also louder...it's never bothered me, but I do have to tell the wife to speak up often.

However, I'm not sure bent wheels are caused by the side wall stiffness. If someone claims side wall stiffness made the wheel bend while changing tires, then they didn't have the right equipment or the necessary experience. Some over on the forum complained of bent wheels from road hazards...alloy wheels will bend, even tear, when you hit a deep enough pot hole hard enough...been there, done that; it doesn't matter what kind of side wall you have.

By the way, Roy, you didn't say if those helpful tire guys were able to fix you up with brand new custom rims for your Toyos. I'm guessing the good wheel they didn't bend is now filling up your trunk as an essential spare. I'm surprised you didn't instantly see the beauty of run flat when you saw that big honker occupying most of your available storage space. (I might be all wet on that thought...I'm not sure you could get the trunk lid closed on C6 Vette tire.) You can always use those sealant inflators plus a portable compressor...that solution doesn't use as much space.

i had a set of run flats off a 98 or 99 on my Old Farm Use 61 vette(ZR1 drivetrain). the runflats were 5 seconds slower on a 45 sec autox course, noisy as skeletons fornicating on a tin roof and transmitted vibrations from 1 micron gravel. sold them and happy with Kumhos.mike

I don't put much mileage on my 96 that has run-flats, but I never had any complaints with the factory tires. And I've not had any complaints since I removed and preserved the factory tires and replaced them with identical run-flats. Just lucky, I guess.

I agree that Goodyears become noisy after about 25,000 miles.

I put on Firestone Run Flats and they were great for handling and noise level.

Any of the newer low profile tires (runflat or not) can cause a bent rim if you hit a pot hole hard enough. I have never had that happen with the any of the newer Corvettes I have owned with run flats. I am one of the few, I guess, that likes the way the run flats handle and don't really notice the noise. I put aftermarket exhaust on anyway as the new cars sound like Toyotas with the stock exhaust. I also like the piece of mind run flats give you in the event of a flat.

Junked my 04 goodyear runflats with 12,000 miles. Went with the michelin pilot sport a/s plus, still a run flat and has some noise. But at least a 80% improvement, I think it is the goodyears.

                    Gary,
How are you driving? I don't know anyone who is getting that many miles form the Run-Craps. And mine were/are noisy from the beginning -- but it depends on the road surface. Some roads they are quiet like a Cadillac and others they make so much noise I can't talk to the passenger.

Oh, and don't get me going about driving in the rain. Chevrolet made a fine car but it sucks as a boat. On the Road Tour we floated around St. Louis. The old cars had no problems, but the water in the truck ruts had ALL the C6s hydroplaning. I think raising the pucker factor that high takes the fun out of a drive.

I have sold hundreds of C5's and C6's and very rarely see the original Goodyears last 25000 miles. They do, but no often.

They typically get noisy at 10 to 12000 miles ! Goodyear tire was the weakest point of these cars in my opinion.

I get about 25K out of the run flats and when the wife says this car is getting noisy I tell her it's time to get a new vette. It works for me.

Corvette Enthusiast had an excellent article about run flats versus a compact inflation pump/repair kit a few months back that recommended the pump with a different tire was the way to go. I'd have to go look back over prior issues to find it, but they seemed to recommend this system. I got 32,000 miles on my original C5 Goodyears before changing to new Michelin Pilot Sports that are much quieter. The originals were also very noisy in a convertible. The CE article as I mentioned was very informative about various options.

I have my original tires on my '02 with over 30K on them with half the tread left. I've had two punctures in one tire and driven them with little to no tire pressure in them for hundreds of miles so far, they ride fine. There noisy on rough surfaces, but quiet on smooth roads.

That is really amazing. Especially if your front tires are good yet. Usually the inner tread on the fronts wear very prematurely. Glad you got your moneys worth on that 02 set of tires !!
