    Re: 1956 Oil Pan

He found the oil pan at a local classic chevy junk yard. It was not cheap. I will not be at Carlisle (I wish I was) and I do not have an extra oil pan. Good luck on your search.

The truck oil pan with the extra fitting can be modified to "resemble" the factory correct 56 Corvette oil pan. The triangle area where bthe fitting is located is removed, and the pan is welded up. I have seen this done, and it looks good once installed. Keep you eyes open, these pans show up occassionally on Ebay, etc.

If you can find an NOS or used GM #360867 you will have a pan that's about 95% correct but will require removal of the truck oil pan fitting. This can be done as Ed described. This pan requires the 0.41" thick front oil pan seal.

The original 1956 Corvette SERVICE oil pan with pan mounted dipstick tube, GM #3727732, was discontinued in August, 1957 and replaced by pans with the truck oil line fitting. It's even possible that the 3727732 was not the original Corvette pan and also had the fitting. If so, the original Corvette oil pan was never available in SERVICE but, if it was, it was only available for a very short time. So, for all practical purposes, the only source of an original oil pan with pan-mounted dipstick tube and without truck oil line fitting is from a 1956 Corvette that was originally so-equipped.

Other GM SERVICE oil pans for 1956 Corvette with pan-mounted dipstick but with truck oil line fitting:

        GM #3736615
        GM #3789632
        GM #3794060

The tube bracket that is held on with 3 rivets is a cast piece on the Corvettes and a stamped steal piece on the truck pans .Both will work . Dan

              Guy's,
The stamped steel style tube mount is not even close to the original pan. It will stick out like a sore thumb to anyone who knows what they are looking at. If you are trying to do this for judging purposes, why bother. You might as well use the left hand mounting position and save all the time and labor, plus expense. Maybe if you keep looking down the road you might find a real one. Somebody has one laying in a garage with no idea what it is from or what it is worth. Just my two cents worth. Hi Mike, I have been wanting to talk to you. Bryan Hepper and I have been talking about E1956 cars and he mentioned your name. Bryan has a engine casting date of K105 (Car #74), My car has a casting date of K145 (Car #1284). There is a oil plug just forward of the intake manifold on most 265ci engine except for some E1956 cars. Bryan and my car do NOT have the plug. Does your car have this plug?? ( See attach )
Also the 427ci mid 60 Cars had the oil dip stick on the passenger side, is this dip stick tube like on your car?? ( see Attach ) If so maybe I could put it on a 56 oil pan, can you give me you opinion. Can you send me a picture of this dip stick tube? Thanks for your help, Joe Pennacchio (48633)

Ed, do you have this oil pan or know where it is?
                  Thanks, Joe
