    L46 Choke Rod Help

What went wrong here? I got all three parts from Corvette Central.

    352177 Clip
    353089 Choke Rod
    352180 Choke Cover

As you can see the dog leg on the clip is in the wrong direction via the only way you can install the eyes on the clip with the carb bracket. CC says they have no prior complaints and I can see no other way to install the rod.

All I can say is a few years back no one had the correct choke rod for the L-46. Just the same generic sold for multiple applications. Looks to me you have the wrong rod/ clip.

I found that paragon had the original prints to fabricate the correct piece. It wasn't cheap but well worth it to me. I'd give them a call.

BTW why do you have the heat shield/thick gasket under the carb? Not ment for your application

Steve, I noticed a couple things on your pic that I don't have on my 69 350/350. one of which appears to be a heat shield between the carb and manifold. Is that original? jim

They are listed in GM catalogs and picture illustrations; but I believe Joe said they were only dealer installed in attempt to correct over heat.

I personally love them; they look great and serve a performance function, they even have the GM fire order on them.

I bought two extra just in case GM discontinued them. Current GM number is 10147945; I also have one of the original ones that the number starts with a 3 but I'm holding on to that one for something special.

That shield has a very thick gasket attached which may or may not effect your choke rod operation, since the original gasket was much thinner

Dennis is correct on both accounts.

The rod must be adjusted; which is actually no big deal, but correct the same.

Remember, 1970 was a 'special' year in that the State of California introduced emissions control rule making jumping the gun for the US Federal legslitation that took effect in 1971... Some think that might be one of the reasons for 1970 Corvettes to have been delayed until 1/1/70.

But, for each engine configuration in 1970 there were at least TWO versions of the carb. One for 49-State delivery and another (option NA9) for California delivery.

The NA9 version of the QJet used the carb gasket with heat baffle plate. So, when talking about what's 'right', the pencil point has to be sharpened to define whether we're talking about a 49-State car or the NA9 California car version...

Perhaps 10-15% of factory production went to California, but it's pretty RARE that we see a real McCoy, NA9, equipped Corvette show up on the judging field! This is probably because prior owners removed the NA9 components and it was a 'hassle' for the restorer to put their car back to its factory original NA9 configuration...

Jack... I always suspected that the 7040507 carb had the long vacuum tube extending through the the choke diaphram bracket connecting to the AIR pump for calif only models. (seen in 2 of the 3 photos). I've been told SOME 7040207 carbs have this tube as well. Doesn't make sense to me, any thoughts?

FYI my carb is the Service Replacement; I think, 7029207.

And aside from the rod not being a correct replacement, the clip is bad.

                        Steve,
I am glad that you found one to use. We are all a little confused of how we sold them for a few years and never had any calls. We have it flagged to check when our next order comes in to see if maybe just a few were mislabeled. I really appreciate your call and e-mails. We are going to use your pictures to compare the next shipment of these clips. Thank you again Steve.

                        Thank You,

I got lucky and we had one in our shop on an old carb, this will take care of mine but you still may want to straighten this out for the future.

On the Air Dam 1 piece (early) or three piece (late); the cut over Vin is 731836 so that is going to be in the ball park of October 9, 1969 give or take a day or two.

Two thumbs up for the CC guys caring.

I am no expert, but I remember that at times you bent the choke rod to get the proper throw. Dennis showed one bend in his choke rod and on my 70, L-46 I only remember one bend. I would attempt to straigthen out the extra bend carefully and see if that works. P.S. I am having the same problem with different vendors on replacement parts.

The 1970 NA9 option (which BTW was NOT California only, but was California required) did not come with an Air Injection Reactor (AIR) pump.

Interesting. The TIM/JG states:" AIR required vehicles- LT1's, 1971 LS6 engines, and all 1972 454 engines, 1972 base engine (200hp), and all delivered for sale in California".
