    Krylon Semi-Flat 1613

As most of you know, Krylon has revamped its aerosol spray paint lineup, and as a result, Semi-Flat # 1613 is no longer available.

Awhile back someone reported that: " 'Semi-Flat' is now available as #9203". BUT it turns out that this new number is an entirely different formulation. It is a slow drying paint, similar to Rustoleum, and says "Enamel" on the can. The familiar words:"Dries in 12 minutes or less" does not appear on the can.

I have ascertained that the true supersession of the old paint is now called "Satin Black". It falls under the "Indoor-Outdoor" line of paints. The new number is 51613, and the words "Dries in 10 minutes or less" appears on the can.

    Joe,
The Krylon 1613 we all learned to know and love is still available in its original form thru fastenal or Graingers, its now in the industrial line, taken away from the retail consumer, when you buy it from either of those sources its supplied with an ingredients sheet and you will see why it was taken away from the average walmart shopper. Its also listed at between $5 and $6 dollars a can. If your local branch of either cannot help, they just do not know where to look, send me a PM and I can tell you where I get it

      Joe,
I believe 1613 is still available in quantity (boxes of six cans?) through commercial suppliers. The 51613 formulation is way too glossy. SEM 39143 is preferred by many. Since my painter could get SEM in bulk, we used it to blackout the engine bay and underside of the hood. Looks great. There's lots of info in the archives. I started a post a while ago that brought out a lot of info. You may want to check it out.

        All,
Sems Trim Black which most likely is 39143 does a great job mimicking the old Kylon 1613. Gives a real low gloss appearance w/o being too flat. Great stuff.

          Joe,

Sems 39143, I think is the best replacement for Krylon 1613. It has the same finish as the 1613 but it is tougher and I think it looks better (without multiple coats of 1613). 1613 was really thin.

Krylon 51613 is too glossy, they screwed themselves when they changed the line.

Do you remember all those test strips of black paint in my garage below the carburetors. I've tried them all, all the satin blacks, trim blacks, semi-flat blacks, semi-gloss blacks from all different manufacturers. Sems 39143, I found was the best for C2 consoles, black dashes, glove boxes, and even general blackout paint (if you want to waste the stuff). But how much blackout is there.

It has just the right semi-flat finish for me

            Thank you.
I'll return the "stuff" I bought last week (#9203.........slow dry enamel), then go to Graingers, in my neighborhood and get the 1613.

            $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Jerry..............If I cannot get the 1613, for any reason, I'll pick up some of the Sems. I am "freshening up" some parts in the engine bay that were originally painted with the 1613, so you can see why I'd feel better about putting 1613 over 1613.

              Re: Krylon Semi-Flat 1613

Call ahead to be sure its in stock, I find they do not always have it on the shelf and that you can usually negotiate a better price if you order a case of 6 or more. Has anyone got a line on where to find the old Krylon black primer? I can still get brown, white or grey.

I'm headed to my local hardware store today, they had a few can left last time I was there.

Bill, after not being able to find the black primer at local retailers, I called Krylon corporate and asked about ordering a case. They directed me to a local paint store (similar to a Kelly Moore paint store), who they said was a distributor for Krylon. At this local "distributor" store, they ordered a case of six cans for me. Charged me the retail price of about $3 something for each of the six cans, and no additional shipping charge. They arrived in about 4 or 5 days.

The box has a sticker stamped: 1316 BLACK PRIMER, and below that KO1316.
                  Hope this helps. Ridge

Joe, Travers Tool has it. 800-221-0270
In their 2008/2009 catalog 1613 on page 1287.
                    Semi-flat black 1613. Order#81-010-126
                    5.29 for 1 to 5 cans. $4.76 for 6 cans.
They also have the Dull aluminum #1403 81-010-114. Same prices.
Neither one of those can be found at the local stores. If so then it's old stock. Krylon doesn't shelf that well. Those old spray cans go bad and fizzle out. Been there.

We spray all our castings with Cry-lawn Dull aluminum. (Or have been accused of doing so).

By the way if you really have a product you use all the time and love you better stock up as tomorrow it will be history.

                      Again....

When Sherwin-Williams (owner of the Krylon brand) reassigned our good old #1613 Semi-Flat to their industrial/commercial channels, the retail product got re-numbered to #51613, and the actual gloss changed to a shiny semi-gloss. The original stuff got re-numbered to KO1613, it's called "primer", and here's one of the industrial suppliers that carries it:

I changed to the SEM Trim Black #39143 several years ago - it sprays better, lays out better, and is more durable and scratch-resistant than good old #1613.
