Based upon my personal experience:
Last winter, my 1965 L76 engine occasionally backfired and always ran too hot (didn't overheat, two different things) because one plug wire was loose. I swear I could not tell, otherwise, that a wire was off! (that L76 is a MONSTER!) Check your plug wires under the shielding and make sure the boots are snug on those plugs. -Clark
