    Alternator Diodes

I read in the 1965 JG that the diodes at the rear of my car's alternator should be date-coded in ink. Page 118 is very specific as to the black and red ink printing on the diodes.

I looked at my alternator's diodes and I cannot discern any ink printing on them. At the last chapter meet, there was no deduction made for this in Flight judging. I am not complaining, just curious. OK, you judges out there, should this have received a deduction, or not?

My car's alternator shows a correct date code (4M19: Dec. 19, 64?) prior to the car's build date of 2/65. My next concern is that since date-coded diodes are listed in the '65 JG, can these date-coded diodes be bought and installed or is there a way to restore the ink stamping on the existing diodes? -Clark

    Re: Alternator Diodes

All features and parts of the alternator or any part for that matter should be considered on the flight judging.

Judges just missed that set of diodes to your benefit. Next time they may catch that and other issues. People are human.

Agree with Gene; with 15 points originality and 11 points condition, something should have been deducted for not-visible ink markings, especially since the TIM&JG goes into such detail in their description.

Here's a link that you will find interesting, from a few years ago. I also understand that you can get two or more stamps made up and "do your own".

Unfortunately, once the factory original ink stamps are gone, faded or oblitherated there's nothing to be done to 'rejuvenate' the marks. You're stuck with trying to 'restore' them via RESTAMPING.

There, I said the 'nasty' word...

          Clark,

If you decide going down the road to "restore" the alternator, Ken Bruno of Ken Bruno Motorsports does excellent work.

            Re-Inking sounds much better .

Having an alternator completely rebuilt/restored just to get some red and black ink on the diodes seems excessive even to an NCRS perfectionist guy such as myself.

So, if I want to restamp, oops, "re-ink" the alternator diodes to conform to the 1965 JG, what do I do? Do I go to the local office supply store and have them make me up individual (very small) rubber stamps? Or, does someone already have a "kit"? -Clark

There is no kit that I am aware of. I'd try contacting a Staples or Office Depot.

Not sure if this helps, but here is my completely restored alternator.

67, 327/350 horse, 4 speed with TI, no air (well, unless the top is down )
