    C1 "Unobtainium" parts list

We are finally getting our '60 Fuelie back together and thanks to this forum, Driveline vendors and a few good parts houses, we've been able to find almost every part that we needed. There are only a handful of remaining items that are either very difficult to find in original form or that are available in reproduction form but will suffer significantly with regard to judging. Although I think that the answer is that I need to get in line with everyone else who is looking for these scarce original (or refurbished) parts, I would hate to find out later that there was a source for something that I had been seeking for a long time.

The seemingly hard to find parts are:

    - Non-vented oil fill cap
    - coil ballast resistor
    - jack
    - parking brake light flasher unit
    - gas cap
    - shocks
    - upper fender windsplit molding

All of these items have substitutes or repo's available, but if even I can easily spot the discrepacies, they would stand no chance under a judge's scrutiny. So if anyone knows of a good source for one of these parts, please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Lee

Here's a repro that won't break the bank and won't make you nervous about getting it stolen at Corvettes at Carlisle:

      http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c1-a...58-1962-a.html

Mary Jo may have the ballast resistor you need. Check this thread for details:

      https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...65101&uid=9194

Not sure how many points will be lost for the $215.25 Corvette Central "exact reproduction" jack, but it probably wouldn't justify spending an extra $1,000 for an original on a strictly dollars per point basis:

That gas cap is pretty sexy Loren. But I'm not sure if it's worth $100 for a
repo ? But it is much better than buying a 50 year old one for $400
I know someone with a few ballast resistors correct for C1's for less than Mary Jo's one she is selling. Paragon have a license for Delco and advertise a Ballast Resistor for pocket change ? It looks exactly correct I'm looking into it for myself as well I'll keep you posted how accurate it is. I cannot tell the difference from the photo it looks identical. Stewy

Is it a different one than the black dot one with no tang?:

Loren the photo on the web is difficult to tell. The catalogue photo is a much better photo. Sorry for my ignorance but what is the black dot ? And what is Tang. Stewy

The jack will probably cost you 2 points per a judge at my local chapter, assuming you spray it, as it is not totally covered in paint (the bearing and threaded rod). I've seen original jacks on ebay go for $700-1000, so around $3-400 per point (very dear). jack is prolly one of the worst returns on points:dollar

You can get a good used gas cap for $150 or so and replate it (that's what I'm doing on a nice eaton cap).

I've seen a guy on ebay who stamps NOS shocks. It runs around $850 or so for standard shocks. Never heard how close they are or if he's legit. ebay user "57f12" DAN (913) 268 5314. I'm going to use a set of 5818/5751 monroe shocks. Joe Lucia said they are about as close as you get for modern shocks. I've only seen 1 point per shock deducted using those, so you figure that's $200+ per point for the NOS.

I've seen the parking brake flashers come up on ebay periodically for around $100+ - but don't quote me since I haven't really looked for those. I have one and it works

NOS ballast resistors come up on ebay and for the half moon with black ink dot ( #1931385?) you're prolly looking at $250+ unless the recession drops the price. I got lucky and found a used one for $30, but I don't know yet if it works

                Re: C1 "Unobtainium" parts list

The black dot is ballast resistor's 'ID' mark that's called out on the part drawing. Most judges will look for the rounded edge of the resistor's mounting tab to have a small rectangular 'break away' tab characteristic of the manufacturing process thought to apply to that era (the 'correct' reproduction ballast resistors lack this feature/aspect).

There is some controversy among judges as to whether or not the black dot ID mark was on factory original parts or if it was only put on service spare parts. But, in my opinion, it was on all parts as:

                (1) It's called out on the part drawing.

                (2) The factory resistors weren't individually boxed like service spares.

                (3) If there WAS a need to visually distinguish between 'hot' ballasts and 'cold', low horse, passenger car/truck ballasts it would have been at the final assy plant...

Jack your spot on the repo doesn't have the break away section at the front. I think it would be an easy fix !!! I was going to email you but didn't want to bust your chops with more questions. Stewy

Thanks, everyone for the responses. I got a couple of good leads on my parts list and a reality check on $ per likely points lost on some of these hard to find parts.

I just put a parking brake switch on ebay and sold it for 100.00.

Because times are hard I see more parts on e-bay selling but still not cheap and usually the same things over and over . The parts I like to buy that are RARE are not in the JM or described vary good. Those are the parts I look for that are vary hard to find because again there not judged (YET) and a seller doesn't stop to think any one would be interested to put them on e-bay.
I'll tell you a secret and don't tell any one , when I see some one selling many parts for a 54 or 55 I e-mail them asking if they have a part I need ( yes it's not judged or may be repro'ed) and they ask why I wont that, but many times they have it and sell it to me/ how do you think I show original parts to post showing pic's.
