    63 FI air filter

Seems to me I read a thread here about paper air filters that can be substituted for the stock foam one I've been using. My searches can't find that post, so can someone post that info again?

    Thanks, Mike

    Re: 63 FI air filter

Hi Michael, I used a NAPA paper filter 'NAPA GOLD 6416' and installed a 2" dia. PVC spacer on the front which is 2 3/16" long to take up the gap because it's not quite long enough. There is also a nice K&N filter which also requires a spacer. Believe these are for Ford truck applications. John DeGregory knows all the details I'm sure. You can also use a smaller paper filter as the 'spacer' which gives you more breathing capacity ofcourse.

Hi Bill, I have used the Paragon foam one, use K&N oil spray on it, seems to work well, you need to clamp the front end because the filter seems to expands alot from the screen mess. Have put 10K miles on one, including a dust storm going to Las Vega for my PV! (passed) Wash it in mild soap, not kerosene and all will be good!

The NAPA 6416 is a tapered element with a hard rubber ball at the end. The end that goes toward the core support. As Holstein said you can use a hunk of PCV pipe as a spacer or use a thin round element that you glue to the fat end of the 6416.
Dennis Pacy, a fellow NCRS member and mid year restorer from Mass. does a nice job of selling this assembly if you don't want to mess with it.

I used to know the part number of the round thin element that butts up against the NAPA 6416 but I lost it. JD

I also have the K&N filter with round ball at front, number 04024 on it. You'll still need the spacer. The paper small filter that fills the requirement is 6 3/4 dia, 2 1/4 thk, mine has a part number of 46033 but I can't make out the mfr. You can use the small paper one with the other 6416 one to get a larger area of air into the FI. I would put a thin piece of foam on the 'big end' to seal the elements better.

I've used the Paragon foam filter. Its fine but, it tends to have to be compressed a lot to fit. I don't want to mess with the oil any more, because, no matter how much I wring it out, it still drips a bit when compressed.

I'll try the NAPA 6416 filter and make up a PVC spacer.

              Thanks, Mike

Michael, you might also look for the spacer filter to give you more filtering area etc. Glue them together and you're set! You will also need a small spacer under the big end of the paper filter to 'center' it in the cannister.

Michael, just went out and looked at the NAPA paper filter forward end doesn't have much taper which would be restrictive if you used the filter spacer behind it. The spacer would only work on the K&N which is nicely tapered towards the front which will let more air past, so the PVC spacer would be the better way to go with the paper filter. The K&N is really nice when using the spacer filter. I've used the Paragon and the K&N set ups.

Try the K&N, RX-3990, it is a cone filter with a base of 6" and top of 4" with a length of 9" Appears K&N now call it a RX-3990-1 however all specs look the same.

If Dennis already has them made up, I'll avoid my normal two trips to the auto parts store (three, when I "Rube Goldberg" things) and give him a call.

                      Thanks, Mike

Alan, sounds like a better one than the shorter K&N I have, do you need any 'foam' at the big end for a tight fit?

                          Dan,
I used three 1/4" thick foam sections (1/2" X 1") at end. That was done to raise the end so a little more air could enter the front - was racing the car.

However now I would not bother and believe it was not needed. The new -1 design appears to have a thicker and rounded end - I think.
