    Differential Carrier Bushing Removal 1980

    Hello All,

Help...I am out of tricks to try with the removal of the 2 differential carrier bushings in my C-3 (1980). The old bushings are dry rotted and I need to replace them. The carrier is out of the car but I am stumped. I can not get the remaining rubber and pressed in (i assume) steel sleeve to budge.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks, David

I've never done this job on an 80-82. However, if the bushings do, indeed, have an outer steel shell, then I expect what you're facing here is dissimilar metal corrosion between the aluminum cover and steel bushing shell. In that case, I think what I'd try to do is to remove as much of the rubber as I could. Then, with a fine coping saw CAREFULLY cut through the bushing shell width-wise. Finally, using a screwdriver or similar tool, "peel" up the shell, starting at the slit.

However, make sure that there is a steel shell on the bushing. Most GM aluminum suspension PRODUCTION parts that included a rubber bushing were vulcanized in place. SERVICE bushings, when available, usually used a steel shell, though.

By the way, the GM bushings for this application are available under GM #527593. Replacements equivalent to the GM part are also available from NAPA under their number 2674302.

Thanks Joe. I found the bushings at Corvette Central. I believe you are right-on the money with the dissimilar metal corrosion diagnosis. It is a steel shell in the aluminum carrier.
I am go to try the small coping saw as you suggested.

If you can find a saw like the one pictured below at a local hardware store, I think it will work well for you. The blade on this saw is 1-9/32" wide which I think will fit within the bushing shell. Otherwise, you might be able to do it with just a hacksaw blade.

Be VERY careful not to nick the carrier. If you do it makes a good point for a stress crack to start.
