Re: C1 door panel help
John, correct as Dave says. There is an inexpensive tool made to remove these clips from the handle, door handle and door lock handle. I have seen them in auto parts stores and I believe J C Whitney has them, also. I have used a screw driver beofre but be very careful. I recommend the tool versus the screw driver.

Re: C1 door panel help
I heard that a small pink type shop towel can also work well. Try to work the towel behind the knob and have the towel snag on the little clip. By pulling the towel out, (The correct way) the clip will come with the towel.
I think you need to know the way the clip was inslalled. Try to see the clip and what way it must be pull out.

Re: C1 door panel help
I just removed both of my jesus clips in 3 seconds by using a 90 degree pick. You know the little ones that come in a packet of 3 with little screw driver handles and very sharp at the ends. I can't recall what there called orger? The window winder handle also comes off just as easy. I think they cost less than $10 for a pack and they are very handy a must for the w/shop. Stewy- Top

Re: C1 door panel help
Anyone have any experience removing the little power window panel?
Are the same kind of retaining clips used on it? Or can I just pop it off, then remove the wiring? Seems like there must be something holding it in place.

Re: C1 door panel help
Thanks for the info Paul......that sounds easy enough.
I will have to replace the entire interior in my '62......noticed that new door panels don't have cutouts for things like this.
I'm guessing you just carefully cut your own using old panel for template?
Another question....it's a dumb one, but I need to know. What do the little keeper rings mentioned in above posts look like? And what does the tool for removal look like? Anyone that could post pictures?
That stuff may be in the 'mystery tools' section of my car things.
Thanks for the help,

Re: C1 door panel help
Hi Sandy,
Check the back of your new panel, there might be a an outline/punchout of where the switch should be placed. The alternative, as you mentioned, is to use your old panel as a template.
The clip for the lock lever is just a C clip, the open end faces the lever side. I just press on the door panel, and use a dental tool with a hook on it to snag the C clip and remove.
I think I have a loose one kicking around, I'll try to take a snap for you this aft.

Re: C1 door panel help
Thank you for the answer Paul.
The photo below has a few items I'm not sure about......one on the far left says "for external retaining rings" but it looks too big from the description of what all of you are using to remove the retainers. There must be a difference between internal rings and external ones, or this tool wouldn't differentiate.
If none of these tools are right, I do have some angled picks and I think some dental tools.
I'm guessing some of these retainers are just open rings..c rings I think you mentioned, that just pull off. Do some of them have little loops on the open ends?
And how do you get them back on?
Any enlightenment is really appreciated.

Sandy, I will try to find a picture of the removal/install tool. Mine looks similiar to a sheet metal tuning fork with steps for various size clips. It is "U" shaped with a "handle" on the bottom of the"U". Inside the "U" is where the steps are.

Re: C1 door panel help
Hi Steve,
Thanks for posting the tool picture.......I have not run across one of those in my car stuff, so assuming I don't have it.
The first time someone said you can never have enough tools, I laughed.
It sounded like such a 'guy' thing.
Not laughing anymore, just ordering more tools.

Re: C1 door panel help
Hi Sandy,
Sorry for the delay, but here are a couple of pictures with an old lock lever that I found.
On the first you can see where the C spring clip fits the the channel on the back (sorry no clip to show you).
On the second, you can see the dental tool that I use to remove the clip. I'd bet that the correct tools that the others have shown would work better, but the hook is what I have.

Re: C1 door panel help
Hi Paul,
Thanks for the pictures......I found dental tools in my old silversmithing stuff, so I can at least remove the clips.
How did you put them back on? Just kind of slide clip behind handle and then push with tool?
At least I know how to get it apart.......a ways off though, haven't finished sanding yet.
Door panels will be easy I think compared to the rest of the interior....but don't want to look too far ahead. It gets a little scary when I think about the whole scope of this project.
But not scary enough to bail on it.
(Only because you guys are the backup squad.)
