    Trim tag changed out

I hate to admit it but I bought a 67 roadster with a reproduction trim tag. (short story is the inspector from across the country did not catch it).
My question is...how can I find out why it was changed and what is original on my car? (both seller & inspector went underground). Does anyone have any history on a 67 Roadster, green/green, VIN 194677S108972, out of Florida, 427/390, M20, A/C.
Appreciate any help to unravel the mystery. Dan

    Dan,
67 model has tank sticker, drop tank and if your lucky it's still there. It can verify options and color.

Sorry I have no idea how to track down history behind tag removal.

      Hello Dan,

I'm sure you're going to get ALOT of help on this one. And I'm sure you've done alot of legwork in your own investigation already, but without knowing what you've found so far, I'll just tell you what I'd do first if the car was mine.

What do the rivets on the VIN tag look like? They should be "rosette" type. If you're secure with the VIN# originality, then it's always worth trying a title search. I've been able to find prior owners of my '66 390/AC convertible back to '76. Some documentation found through them.

Since it's a '67, I'd check to see if the gas tank sticker is there. There are ways of checking without removing the exhaust, gas tank etc. If you spot it there, then you'll have to drop the tank for a careful examination. You should then be able to know most of the car's originality.

If the tank's been replaced or the sticker's gone, you should be able to find the original exterior color of the car by removing either door sill plate and carefully pulling inward on the carpet and underlayment there. This is how I confirmed my car's original color when I first purchased the car.

There are enough bogus '67 435hp cars out there, but the 390hp usually isn't cloned. To check for some originality clues, I'd check the tach redline to see that it's correct for '67 390hp, measure the front sway bar 7/8" diameter, oil pressure guage usually 80 psi, presence of rear sway bar etc.

Why someone would change your trim tag to green/green is a bit of a mystery to me. I wish you luck Dan, and if you want to compare 427/390/AC components/originality with me, I'm here to help.

      Good luck,
      Mike '65 350hp, '66 390hp

Hi Dan, if you can do it, can you post a good clear image of your repro trim tag. I would love to see where, how it differs from correct original, and I think others might as well. Good luck finding back story on your car.
Hope it is a good and enjoyable car in all other ways.

          Mike:
I am good with the VIN tag, and engine (went through regional judging 3 weeks after the car got delivered).
The tank sticker that came with the car is in suspect (one item does not match up - TS states side exhaust, but judging called them not installed at the factory).
I have learned ALOT in the last 2 years (I filled my library and inspect potential cars myself).
Someone told me to "just put the top down and drive it" (and that is what I have been doing).

            Hi Dan,

Sounds like you've done your homework. Yes, I too would like to see this repro trim tag. It would be good to know what traits it has/shows. As I said before, if you'd like to compare 390hp/AC components that would be good. I've got a couple of questions myself.

I'm glad you're enjoying driving your car. I drive my yellow '65 regularly. Probably shouldn't, but I do.

            Take care,
            Mike

Does someone know what the two letter code should be on the back side of the cluster for a 390 hp car? That might be a clue as well.

I would have that info. My cluster's an original and is packed away. Easy enough to get to. If anyone needs it, let me know.
