Attn: Joe Lucia; Please settle friendly dispute

    Hello:

Having a little difference of opinion with my engine rebuilder. He is doing the rebuild for my LT1 (1970) He claims that the fan hub should be attached to the water pump hub with studs not bolts. He claims he has
seen some Chevy V8's with studs coming from the water pump hub to the
fan hub. I give him the assembly manual to look at which clarly shows the
hubs attached with bolts. Has Chevy ever had studs coming from the
    water pump hub?

    Thanks; Larry

My 1970 LT1 has studs attaching the water pump hub to the fan clutch. I can assure you that is the way it came from the factory, since I am the original owner. And, by the way, the water pump hub has dual-bolt hole circles. Yes, contrary to what many will tell you, the factory used the dual pattern water pump hub.

My belief is that all 1970 Corvette small blocks used the same attaching hardware, but I am sure there are those who will disagree.

Many of the details of the illustrations in the AIM are not accurate. One can never rely on the AIM illustrations for fastener head configuration and hose clamp configuration, for example. The purpose of the AIM was to show the assembly line workers how parts fit together and to give torque values. The workers installed the parts they were given, and didn't care if the part was a bolt or a stud and nut, if it had a hex head or a Philips head.

Yea, I was going to go for "My belief is that all 1970-72 Corvette small blocks used the same attaching hardware, but I am sure there are those who will disagree." but I decided to chicken out and play it safe.

From 1969 onward, STUDS were used for fan clutch hub-to-waterpump hub attachment. Period.

Also, I do not see where the 1970 AIM "...clearly shows the hubs attached with bolts". The 1970 AIM clearly shows the hubs attached with studs. And, the 1970 AIM is thus 100% correct.

            Joe:
Just a small technical correction- early '69's had bolts not studs (page 331 of AIM note 6 staes that "nut dwg was a bolt" 11-7-68). My October '68 car is this way and it is a PAIN to allign all the pulleys and fan clutch and get the bolts started. Just my 2 cents.

Terry my original owner 1970 built in July has studs and also has the dual pattern water pump hub. Still have the original pump.

                  Joe:
Must clearify: LT1 is for F-Car--Camaro Z28--. Shows clearly in the Camaro
ASM that bolts are used. Got to assume both are the same--Camaro Vs. Corvette LT1. Looks
like I am going to loose this argument with him--correct?

Don't assUme they are the same -- there are a number of differences, not the least of which, I am told, you could get an automatic transmission with the LT1 in F-car. Now if the engine suffix codes were the same for 1970 Camaro and Corvette I would expect the engines to be the same, but I think they are not the same suffix.

I see the Orange one came up in seconds also. I had to go to the garage, uncover the car and fight the AIR, and radiator hose to get a mediocre shot.

A lot of interesting pulley stuff in all these shots.
