    Custom Rebuilt Carburetors

Thanks to the thread on Chicago Corvette you all probably saved me money and stress. I was in the process of ordering an "original" dated 3367 for my 1966 coupe. I have located one at Custom Rebuilt Carburetors in New Jersey. Does anyone have positive or negative feedback?

    Thanks

    Re: Custom Rebuilt Carburetors

Sure, I posted on another thread about Custom Rebuilt Carbs. I originally ordered from Chicago and got the carburetor drop from Custom Rebuilt, so I ended up paying the middle man (Chicago). I've talked with the guys over at Custom Rebuilt Carburetors and they are a family business, been in business a long time and sell carbs they rebuild or will rebuild yours. My carb was a date correct Holly for my 70 LT-1. It had been rechromated, rebuilt and set to factory specs. I put it on and cranked it up and it ran great, didn't have to touch a thing on it.

So, skip the middle man and go direct to them and save some money and deal directly with the guys that do the work. They're more than happy to answer any questions and stand by their work...that's how you stay in business a long time I asked them about Chicago and they said they supply them but outfits like Chicago are really a small part of their business. They said they didn't have any problems with them but they feel it's always better to do business direct with a customer to better serve up what the customer needs.

There's a couple pics of my carb in that thread:

I'll ditto Wayne's comments on a positive experience with Custom Rebuilt Carbs in New Jersey. I never met the guy that owns the shop; I think it's Paul or Tom(?), but I talked to him on the phone a few times. Very professional in business and workmanship, and stands behind his product. Rebuilt, re-plated, and found the correct de-cel pot for my 7040205. Carb ran great right out of the box. I believe previous threads echo similar positive stories.

Custom Rebuilt Carburetors is about the best you can get for a restored carb. I have had 3-4 rebuilt there and never had a problem. Ask for Phil or Tom (brothers) phone # 732 356 4333. Reasonable price, timely turn around and quality product.

I drove there since I live in PA to have my carb rebuilt, and met Phil Cancilla (a real nice guy). The shop was very clean and well organized.

I had the correct carb for my car, but it was the wrong date code. Phil had the correct carb for my car with the right date code. He swapped carbs with me on the spot and just charged me the rebuilding cost. I walked out very happy, talk about fast service.

I have had Phil do carbs for me for close to 20 years back when he was in S Plainfield before his Middlesex shop. Long ago they did Alternators and starters.

              Re: Custom Rebuilt Carburetors

I think I'm the only guy who ever had a "not quite as positive" experience with them.

I had 2 Quadrajets restored by them, one for the 70 Cutlass and one for the 72 I'm working on. I specifically asked that every original part be re-used, and that if any original part could not be used that they return it to me. I even sent it in writing and they called my wife to let them know they got the note. Got the Cutlass carb back with aftermarket screws holding it together, secondary air flaps replaced with incorrect numbered parts, and crappy accelerator pump and needle seat installed. I called several times and never got a straight answer out of them as to why the parts were replaced and why I didn't get mine back. I wasn't about to pay to ship it back when correct replacement parts cost the same as shipping it to them. I gave up on trying to have them make it right, and did it myself. I've since purchased another Cutlass carb as a spare "just in case."

The 72 Corvette carb has the same aftermarket screws installed as well as the same crappy needle seat. However, since it hasn't moved more than 100 feet since the carb was installed I have yet to see if I need to replace parts on that one. I should know in the next 2 weeks.

                Re: Custom Rebuilt Carburetors

I have a 1966 with a 350 H.P. The original Holley carburetor had a leak at the forward float bowl, through the casting about 4 years ago. I tried my reliable parts man who advised me to go to Holley. I figured I should get both float bowls if they were available, which I did not give much hope for. Holley cast both bowls, and included all the internal parts in the bowls. It was adjusted and ready to run, and they supplied a complete rebuild kit. It took less than one month. The price was about $150.

                  Hi;

I've dealt with Phil and his folks for a few years now, and they have supplied correct carbs for three different Corvettes which I have owned. In all cases their work has been top notch and they have stood by their product.

In one case, I bought a "correct" set of carbs for a 1961/245 engine and had a problem with one of the units... Weird problem... it would fail on the car but not on their bench. Phil worked with me personally to get it straightened out and ultimately wound up replacing the unit, no questions asked.

                  Great folks..

                  Joel

By the way, if by ordering you meant from Chicago, you would more than likely be getting it from Custom Built Carburators anyway. The difference would be the price and heaven help you if something went wrong and you had to deal with Chicago for the correction instead of the guys who actually did the work.

I recommended Custom Rebuilt Carburetors. Not Chicago.
