    Flight Judging

I just complete my first Regional show in New England last week, the car did get a top flight and I am working on a few issues that I can remember while I am waiting for the score sheets. Looking for a concenus on two points I can remember.

Frenck locks on a 300 HP small block, I painted them oreange based on the Vette Vues fact book by M.F. Dobbins (page 360 chevy orange, I knew I would not have painted them unless I read it somewhere), the judges said no, they are not painted and I lost points?

My sticker inside the glove box door, I believe (not sure) it is original and it is purple and black & white, lost points they said only suppose to be black and white. No Purple?

PS. Lost major points on my red line tires, rally wheels scored perfect except big deduction for using B.F. Goodrich Silvertown, did not know but that was a very costly mistake, I now have 9 worthless tires. My bolt on set I run when not in an NCRS show, my new spare and the ralley's. Ouch.

    Gary -

The notation in the Dobbins book is incorrect - '67 small-block exhaust manifolds were installed after the engine was painted, and are natural cast iron.

      John,
Thank you for the clarification, that is what I get for reading a book too closely.

        John:
I also got dinged for my throttle spring bracket being unpainted and it also shows that on page 237 of MF Dobbins book, your view on that part being painted or not?
        Thank you, Gary

          Gary,

They say that the throttle spring bracket on a 67 327/300 engine was painted with the engine.

But the one on my 06-26-67 327/300 engine which had never been taken off since it was put on in the factory was not painted. In fact, it had spots of paint drippings on it like it was loosely masked, or put on later and the paint around it touched up.

When I repainted the top of my engine for the first time a few years, I questioned the painting on the bracket and got the answer in the first sentence above. But since I like to leave things the way I found them on this car I've owned since 68, I refinished the bracket back to its zinc plated finish.

I may have taken a point or two at judging on it a number of times, and could have easily painted it, but I like to restore things back to the finish that I think they came with, correct to the Judging Guide or not.

            Hi Gary
            Congrats on your TF.
Original '67 tire pressure labels were not black & white.

Anything is possible, but I find it difficult to believe that they'd have removed two intake manifold bolts at Flint V-8 to install the return spring bracket after the engine was painted (unless the bracket was missing from the main assembly line prior to paint).

                Gary,
Congratulations! Your car looked beautiful to me. You mentioned only a few issues, I've got a list of over 50-items I rememberd from judges (pending recieving the sheets there may be more), comments from other car owners and my personal observations of other cars. Jeff
